I had bilateral knee replacements with Dr. Huang years ago and it went great! So when I broke my knee recently, I went straight back to Dr. Huang at Proliance Orthopedic Associates. Dr. Huang informed me that I would need a revision surgery on my knee and recommended Dr. Alton. I won the lottery with Dr. Alton. He did a great job on my surgery, I am now able to get back to my active lifestyle and career, as well as cross my legs, which I was not able to do before. The surgery was easy and I was only on pain medication for 9 days. When I left the hospital, I already had a wide range of motion. The Joint Center was great, the nursing staff was amazing. The nursing staff even switched their schedules around so that I could have the same nurse that I did for my bilateral knee replacements years ago which made me feel very comfortable. I highly recommend Dr. Alton at Proliance Orthopedic Associates.

I had my right hip replaced 7 weeks ago with Dr. Alton and I am very pleased. I came to see Dr. Alton at Proliance Orthopedic Associates because my right hip kept dislocating and it was extremely painful. My hip dislocated 4 times in 8 months, and even when it wasn’t dislocated, it always felt loose. Due to the loose feeling in my hip, I started walking funny which created even more pain. I was so happy when I found Dr. Alton, he explained everything that was going to happen and answered all of my questions. He has a great bedside manner, and is very easy to talk to. He made me feel comfortable and at ease throughout the whole process. If I ever have any other issues with my hip, Dr. Alton will be the first person I come to, and I’ve already recommended him to others. Dr. Alton is such a pleasure to work with, and I’m glad that I found him as my doctor.

Five years ago I had my right knee replaced by Dr. Barrett. When my left knee started going out, I knew I needed to make another appointment at Proliance Orthopedic Associates to see. Dr. Barrett. My first appointment was with PA-C Jana Flener, who recommended Dr. Alton for my left knee replacement. After talking with Jana about my severe knee pain, I made an appointment with Dr. Alton. Dr. Alton and his staff were great! He did the knee replacement on my left knee a year ago and I have no complaints. The pain is gone, I have full range of motion, and I’m back to living my life to the fullest. I am very pleased with the experience I had with Dr. Alton, he was personable and made sure all my questions were answered, and that I was comfortable through the whole process. I recommend Dr. Alton to anyone who needs a knee replacement. I am a very happy patient.

I recently dislocated my shoulder twice playing hockey and decided it was time to fix the problem before it got any worse. I had an unreal experience at Proliance Orthopedic Associates, all real nice people. Everyone helped me with getting ready for my surgery. The office staff were real nice people showed me where to go, then I met the medical staff and they were really cool. Yes I would recommend Proliance Orthopedic Associates.

My primary care provider referred me to see Dr. Arntz at Proliance Orthopedic Associates in Renton because I was having problems with my shoulder. I was having extreme pain in my shoulder whenever I would reach out to grab an object, or pick up an object, even if it wasn’t heavy. The experience was great from the beginning. The call center was very helpful in setting up my appointment; the office was easy to get to and located conveniently in Renton. Once I arrived at the office, I was greeted by the friendly front office staff and quickly taken back into the exam room. The medical assistant working with Dr. Arntz was fantastic; she was kind, caring, and very helpful. When I met Dr. Arntz he was so friendly, he clearly explained the issue with my shoulder, as well as treatment options. Dr. Arntz explained that I had a chronic rotator cuff taker that no longer could be repaired as well as shoulder joint surface arthritis. Dr. Arntz recommended a Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty. He is very personable and made me feel cared about. I had shoulder surgery with Dr. Arntz and the nursing staff was amazing. Dr. Arntz and his staff all took great care of me. The experience was fantastic. It’s been about a year since my surgery and I’m doing great! My shoulder pain is completely gone and I’ve returned to all of my normal activity. I would recommend Dr. Arntz and Proliance Orthopedic Associates to all of my friends and family. If I ever have another orthopedic issue, I’ll definitely return here for care. Thank you Dr. Arntz for treating me so well and helping me with my shoulder.

I am so grateful to you for the surgery you did on my right shoulder! I couldn’t be happier! Thank you to you and Roxanne for all you have done to get me through my first surgery. Everything was exactly as the portfolio you gave me said it would be…perfectly! I’m so glad Valley ER Doctors sent me to Proliance and I was in your care! You are both awesome in my eyes! I know it is what you do, but to me, it was getting my right arm back!!! I would highly recommend you to anyone. I will always be grateful for your beautiful work. You are always in my heart. Thank you.

The surgeries I received in 2016 were a major rotator cuff surgery from Dr. Arntz in April and a total knee replacement in June by Dr. Merritt. I was referred by Dr. David Sweiger who took the time and interest to try to help me. So glad I switched to UW Medical for my health needs. As the days go on, I am continually grateful for the lack of pain that I had been living with. Although still not like new and probably never will be I remain ever so thankful. During my pre-surgery post-surgery visits, I was treated without prejudice by staff and doctors. Mind you, I look pretty rough wearing bib overalls and a tank top along with kind of long hair. I am always clean. Owning a small business I work with owners and developers and frequently notice when people look down on me and judge me by my looks. They don’t know I am professional. Never once did I feel looked down upon by the Doctors or Staff. I come away from Proliance with great respect and appreciation for how they treat people and the great work they do.

Over 20 years ago he did carpal tunnel surgery on both my hands; a few years later he ‘rebuilt’ my left thumb. So when I was having very painful right shoulder issues, I contacted Dr. Arntz!! He found I had an old injury that had torn the rotor cuff & it was not repairable BUT he said instead he would do a reverse total shoulder joint replacement. Okay, so it was not a “fun” recovery but I knew he did excellent work on my shoulder. Physical therapy is a must. Have no pain & am mobile!!

My name is Al Minish, I have had Bilateral Arthroscopic Debridement and Open Rotator Cuff Repair, and Biceps Tenodesis for work related occupational job injury of 25 years–I was a journeyman painter for Washington State Parks, Port Townsend. I had a personal referral from our daughter who worked at Valley Medical and knew that Dr. Arntz was a very good surgeon and specializes in shoulder repairs.
I found Dr. Arntz and all his office personnel at the Surgery Center to be knowledgeable, professional and courteous to me as a patient. Dr. Arntz repaired my right shoulder in February 2015 and my left shoulder in September 2015 and I can sleep at night now, where I could not sleep at night because of the pain. I have full range of motion and feel that I have totally recovered my right arm with no pain or residual issues. I have been in 18 months of recovery and still doing my home exercises. I am almost a year in September recovered from my left shoulder, and I have full range of motion and sleep at night with no pain. I feel that Dr. Arntz is an excellent surgeon because my right shoulder was not totally 100% repairable but you can’t tell that by me, as the right shoulder is fantastic and better than I could have imagined.
I would tell anyone that they are in excellent, skilled, knowledgeable hands of the best shoulder Orthopeadic Surgeon in the Pacific Northwest. We traveled 2 hours one-way to get to Dr. Arntz’s office in Renton, but we would have gone from anywhere in the state of Washington to get to the “Best” surgeon Dr. Arntz with the great results on my Bilateral Shoulder Rotator Cuff and Biceps Tendon Repair. I am now enjoying my retirement thanks to Dr. Arntz and his skilled team.
Sincerely,
Alan J. Minish

Dear Doctor Arntz,
I have finished my course with Christine and Jan at the Kent gymnasium center. What superb and sensitive therapists they are! Never a moment wasted in trying to discern what to do, using my right side and shoulder. They already knew what to do where, and that I should be doing it. I always felt both tired and invigorated at the session extended. It was good! My right shoulder and back muscles are much more supple and agile, like they used to be. Another therapist, Joann prepped me to the same exercises here in our house. The gym had some good equipment that I used to get familiar with handling simple materials and tools. I’m grateful for all three teachers. I’ll always be indebted to you for lining me up for the intense course in getting this 83-year-old body back into repeated training.
I know that it’s up to me, now, to keep it strong. My wife, Josephine, is encouraging my workouts. I know I’m an old dude, but you all have improved my strength, and will extend my life!
Thank you, Doc!

Growing up, I was always very active in sports and a gymnast for many years. At 46 years of age, an old shoulder injury, aggravated by my occupation, brought my life to a stand-still. I was walking around with my hand in my pocket to ease the pressure off my shoulder. The pain was unreal. I could not lift my arm without holding it with the other. I had a hard time driving or even opening a jar, because the pain in my shoulder was unbearable. As a younger, very energetic 46 year old woman, my life came to a stop about 5 years ago. I couldn’t sleep or function from day to day, because I was so uncomfortable.
I finally went to the medical office at work and was referred to Dr Arntz. I called and had an appointment within a few days. After the x-rays, Dr. Arntz told me that I didn’t have much left for a shoulder and asked me if I had ever considered having it replaced. I was shocked. I thought I was too young for this to happen and was extremely hesitant. I had always been so active. I thought about it and talked it over with Dr. Arntz. He told me I would be able to do a lot of the things that I use to do, with little or no pain. He was so comforting and supportive. It was something that I really needed to think about. One of the first things that crossed my mind was how am I going to hold my first grandchild? Can this really help me or disable me for life?
About a month later, I had my shoulder replaced. With some physical therapy and determination, I had begun a new life. Within 9 months, there was really nothing I couldn’t do. I was even riding my quad again, without any pain and full motion. I have to be honest. As of today, there is still NOTHING that I cannot do, that I did 25 years ago. I can even do cartwheels with my 2 year old grand-daughter. I have no pain and full range of motion. This was the best decision of my life. It’s been 3 years and I’m still going strong. I’m still pain free and have full range of motion. This was the best decision I have ever made. Thank you Dr. Arntz. Thank you for everything!

I’m 75-year-old patient of Dr. Craig T. Arntz. On April 16, 2013, Dr. Arntz repaired my right rotator cuff. Through that procedure, along with his wonderful associates and therapy that he recommended, my shoulder has returned to full range of motion. I’m very thankful to report I’m now fully able to perform all of my household duties and activities with no pain!
As of September 12, 2013, I’ve been released from the doctor.

Dear Dr. Arntz,
I am writing this letter to thank you for your total shoulder replacement surgery you performed on Oct 25, 2012.
Before the surgery I was in pain all the time. I had trouble sleeping at night and doing simple household chores was very difficult. During the day I would watch the clock to see when I could take the next pain pill. The medicine helped for a couple of hours and then I was back to having the same pain as before.
When I was rolled out of the operating room I thought “what did I get myself into”. I asked you to have the nurse call my wife and let her know that I was ok, because she was very worried and you personally called her yourself. That impressed me very much.
Learning how to get by with one arm was very difficult. After two weeks I noticed I was getting better every day. At first I couldn’t even hold a water bottle let alone open one. Now just four months later I am pain free and can do more than I could before the surgery.
If you have a patient that wants to talk to me about the procedure feel free to call me and leave a message and as soon as possible I will call them back.
Thank you,
// Robert

Dear Proliance Orthopedic Associates
I am writing you this letter to tell you about my recent left shoulder replacement surgery done on December 13, 2012. Since this is my second shoulder replacement, having had the right one done four years ago, also by Doctor Arntz, I had some idea what to expect.
I live alone, and I did have assistance at home for 3 days, however, after that, I could move my surgical arm in front of me in the sling to the extent that I was able to do the cooking chores, and similar light things.
After several weeks, the arm continued to heal, and I could feel the strength coming back, and things like dressing became easier. After 3 weeks, I started going back to my Fitness center every day doing cardio and lower body exercises that I could manage with my arm in the sling.
It is now going on 6 weeks since the surgery, and I have been cleared to begin physical therapy. I am looking forward to starting supervised strength training of my surgical arm, and I feel that is a milestone. I have told Doctor Arntz a number of times over the past 4 years that my right shoulder replacement is so good that I get up every morning and go about my daily life not even realizing that it is there. I have every expectation that the left shoulder will be the same.
Best Regards,
// Raymond

“I was diagnosed with a very sever rotator cuff tear and I was referred to Dr. Arntz from my doctor at MultiCare. I cannot be more thankful and blessed to have had Dr. Arntz perform my surgery. He is so dedicated to doing the best job he can for his patient. After surgery he explained how bad my tear was and that the surgery had gone much better than he had hoped. Because of his expertise in this procedure I came through with almost complete mobility of my left shoulder after only 20 weeks. I am so grateful for his expertise in this field and would recommend him to anyone who needs this surgery. We did everything in the way of exercises that he required and that really made a huge difference in my recovery. I thank you Dr. Arntz for all that you did for me. I am very grateful.”

Wow! Am I ever thrilled to have this opportunity to give the highest praise possible to the folks who helped me regain my life! I know this sounds like an exaggeration but, believe me, it is NOT! Proliance Orthopedic Associates and Dr. Craig Arntz, specifically, made it possible for me to reenter the life that was passing me by.
For over a year and a half people saw me clutching my left shoulder with my right hand in a guarding pose; such actions as lifting an ordinary frying pan or reaching a dish from a shelf above shoulder height were simply impossible. As an independently spirited person, this was difficult, but when I had to pass my first grandchild to others because my useless shoulder could not bear her weight, I knew the time had come to have the total shoulder replacement surgery which would give me my life back.
Thanks to the kindness and humanity of Dr. Arntz and his entire operating team, my entire family was as warmly received as I was and well informed as to the nature and extent of my surgery. The recovery process and physical therapy went more smoothly than I could have ever imagined as the exercises worked me closer to my goal day by day.
Thanks to the tremendous talent of Dr. Craig Arntz and the team at Proliance Orthopedic Associates, within four months I regained my full range of motion, at a year I had the strength to lift and play with my grandchild and at two years post-surgery, I refer to my replaced shoulder as “my good arm”. I feel like myself again and I’m so much happier to participate fully in life including lifting both of my grandchildren! Don’t wait another day living half of your life! Visit Proliance Orthopedic Associates and see what wonders they can work for you!
Most Sincerely,
// Elaine

“I was given a referral for Dr. Arntz years ago when I injured my left shoulder. He was a pleasant doctor and person. He suggested shoulder repair at that time. And also told me that with my condition, I would need a complete shoulder replacement eventually. I recovered as well as expected. Several years later I injured the right shoulder. And decided to see Dr. Arntz again. He repaired this shoulder with his usual excellent skills and dedication to his patients. Now forward to the year 2012. As Dr. Arntz had told me, I was ready for the total shoulder replacement. This surgery was less painful then the shoulder repairs. I have recovered. I have retired from my truck driving job. And am enjoying everything that I wanted to do when I retired. I have no pain. I have recommend Dr Arntz to every truck driver that I know who have had shoulder injuries. I also have recommend him to people that I have met, that are not connected to my job or my family. And will continue to do so. He is one of the best doctors I have ever met. He is caring, pleasant, patient and fantastic at what he does in the career he has chosen.”

Victor is no stranger to shoulder pain. Ten years ago Victor had surgery to repair his right rotator cuff. Then pain in both shoulders was again limiting Victor’s mobility and active lifestyle. His family physician referred him to VOA shoulder specialist, Craig Arntz, M.D.
Examination and imaging studies confirmed that Victor had bilateral shoulder rotator cuff tears. Dr. Arntz explained to Victor the rotator cuff is made up of four muscles and tendons that blend together to form a “cuff” over the upper end of the arm (head of the humerus). These muscles combine to stabilize and move the shoulder.
Normal healthy rotator cuff tendons rarely tear. Most rotator cuff tears occur through tendons that have been weakened from the combined effects of injury, “wear and tear” and aging changes.
Individuals with rotator cuff tears usually experience shoulder pain and weakness. Many people with rotator cuff tears complain of a painful catching or grinding sensation when the shoulder is moved. At first, the pain may be mild and only present with reaching or lifting activities.
Dr. Arntz explained rotator cuff tears usually get worse over time. As the rotator cuff tear enlarges, affected individuals often experience increasing pain and disability. Over time, the pain may become noticeable at rest or with no activity at all.
In Victor’s case, Dr. Arntz first recommended a trial course of non-surgical treatment, including physical therapy, activity modification and pain management. When these measures proved ineffective, Dr. Arntz recommended rotator cuff repair.
Dr. Arntz performed rotator cuff repair surgery on Victor’s left shoulder in May 2008. Victor’s right rotator cuff tear was repaired in November 2008.
After surgery, Victor’s shoulder repair was protected in a sling. Dr. Arntz recommended physical therapy.
“I was religious about physical therapy,” Victor said. “I can’t overemphasize how important physical therapy is.”
Rotator cuff repair surgery can be very effective in helping a patient regain lost shoulder comfort and function. After surgery, patients are able to return many normal activities and sleep comfortably.
As long as the shoulder is cared for properly and barring additional injury, the benefit can be permanent, Dr. Arntz said.
“Victor was very motivated. Although it took some time, he is now free of shoulder pain and able to do the things he wants to do.”
Dr. Arntz said. “I’m very pleased Victor is doing so well.”
“Dr. Arntz gave me back my shoulders,” Victor said.
Last April, pain-free shoulders and extended winter weather allowed Victor to take on skiing at Crystal Mountain and snowshoeing on Mt. Rainier. This past summer, he went on a six-mile kayak paddle off of Marrowstone Island and also spent four days kayaking around Lopez Island.
“When I would hike with poles or ski, or kayak particularly, my shoulders would keep me up all night. Now that’s all gone,” Victor said.

Proliance Orthopedic Associates and Dr. William Barrett are rare finds in healthcare and surgery. In my 72 year lifetime, and 50 years as a health care professional, I have a multitude of experiences with doctors, health care systems and service providers. Dr. Barrett and Proliance have exceeded my expectations with all aspects of health care: competence, seamless quality care, compassion, program and resource leadership and management; and follow up. I had a total right knee replacement 3 weeks ago. I am healing and recovering faster than I had expected, thanks to Dr. Barrett, his team and Proliance. I feel confident that I will be able to return to my precious life activities such as dance, hiking, gardening, swimming and my professional work as an occupational therapist; and to pursue new leisure time activities. I look forward to returning to Proliance for my left TKR when it is time, and for my other orthopedic needs. Many of my family and friends have sought and received orthopedic care with Proliance, and return for future care. They and I rate Proliance as one of the few top providers of comprehensive orthopedic surgery and care in the USA. Thank you Dr. Barrett and Proliance.

My surgery was on May 26, 2015 (my birthday). I was very aggressive with my rehab and was able to ski that first winter (6 months from surgery) and was already back to hiking. Today, I do an early morning hike up Pinnacle Peak just outside of Enumclaw, four to five times a week. Round trip the hike is four miles with an 1100’ elevation gain. The picture I sent you was taken at the summit of Mt. Washburn in Yellowstone National Park on August 10, 2017. This hike was a personal goal I set for myself shortly after having surgery. Thanks to the fantastic staff at Proliance and Dr. Barrett’s great surgical skills, I am doing the things I love to do!

I could barely walk. Movement–even turning in bed–was torture. This went on for years. Two hip replacements later, three months apart, and it was as if I’d been granted a new life. The surgeries, which I’d been dreading, were handled expertly by Dr. Barrett and his terrific team, including Jana and Olivia. I was walking farther than I’d walked within a month of the second operation. I can walk miles now, easily and with no pain. I can stoop and pick things off the floor, do my own toenails, do housework, climb stairs, do everything I could when I was young and healthy–as far as my hips are concerned, at any rate! I aced my one-year checkup last month. I am extremely grateful to Dr. Barrett and Proliance.

I had a total right hip replacement on the 10th of August. From my first appointment with Jana Flener, to being discharged from Valley Medical I was TOTALLY impressed and happy with everything. Proliance Orthopedics is just super. They treated me very well. Appointments were always on time. Totally organized as to what I needed to do to prepare for surgery – The other appointments that I would need to go to. They scheduled it all and it was just an efficient organization. Dr. Barrett is great! After meeting him at the seminar, I realized how committed he is to making people’s lives better. He was so patient with all questions and answered them for at least a half an hour after the session closed. Calvin, at the hospital was really good, too, with helping the patients know what to expect. Jana Flener has been just super, as well.
Everything went off without a hitch and I am in Physical Therapy, with Erin Peterson. She is really good and helpful and that is also a good experience.
Valley Medical and Proliance Orthopedics have been excellent in every way.
Many thanks for all of your kindnesses.

I finally decided to do something serious about my basketball knee (surgery in 1978 to remove part of meniscus cartilage), injured from playing at 45 long after I should have quit. So, I had knee replacement about 1 year ago – Sept 9, 2014. I have never regretted the decision, even the next morning after the surgery. I am continuing step aerobics, which pained before, but not now, and walking most days 3-4 miles without pain. The knee had become so bad that simply standing for some time, even with a brace, was very painful. We just returned from a couple weeks in Sweden, visiting old haunts, and walked 6-7 miles per day for most days of the visit. Why do I walk so much? Just following my wife!
I am grateful to Dr. Barrett and his skill, as well as his assistants in surgery, for my greatly improved knee and now straight leg. The nursing staff during my two-day stay was excellent.

I love the ocean. I love the sights, and sounds and smells of a harbor. The birds, the sea life, the people, I love it all. My dream for retirement is to cruise harbor to harbor in my boat enjoying the sights along the way. To explore the harbor towns, and to see all they have to offer. Alaska to Mexico, that is my dream.
Last year around this time I remember walking down the dock and hearing another boat owner call out “Are you ok Kevin”. I answered that I was fine, Why? The response was that I was limping very badly, did I get hurt? I remember telling the lady that no, I was just getting old. That made me think about the pain in my hip. It made me think about the decreased range of motion I had, and the Ibuprofen I had to take every day for the pain.
Well, after a visit to my family doctor, and some x-rays I ended up in Dr Barrett’s office. He took the time to explain to me that my hip was worn out. I could live with the pain, or I could replace it. He explained that I was young at 52 for a hip replacement but that technology had come a long way. There was no pressure, he just laid out the facts. It was an easy decision for me.
We scheduled surgery for January. Everything went very smoothly and professionally. I am from Alaska so I spent a couple of weeks at a local hotel recovering. By 6 weeks post op I was walking a mile on the treadmill every day. By March I was able to go spend a couple of weeks on my boat, walking up and down the long dock several times a day.
Now, it’s September, six months post op. We are just wrapping up a great boating season. I honestly don’t think much about my hip any more. There is no pain, and my range of motion is back to what it should be.
The important thing is that my my life, my dreams are intact. I can still retire in a few years and live my dream. I got my life back. There are not words that can express just how much that means to me.
Thank You Dr. Barrett and the entire Pro Alliance team. You don’t do surgery, you restore dreams. You restore life.

I began my career as a mountain guide taking people to the summit of Mt Rainier in 1968 at age 17. Many years and hundreds of summit ascents later, my knees were shot. I consulted with Dr. Barrett and subsequently decided to go with double-replacement (both at the same time). I was 57 years old and a veteran of coping with broken bones, but never had I contemplated elective surgery. I very much liked and trusted Dr. Barrett and in fact the surgery was wildly successful. Although I had previously climbed Mt Rainier enough times to satisfy my lifelong craving, there were many other outdoor destinations on my list. Since the surgery I have logged countless miles in the Cascade and Olympic mountains, on multi-day backpack trips as well as day hiking. A twenty six mile round trip trek through the Quinault rain forest to Enchanted Valley in Olympic National Park is one of my favorites. My wife and I enjoyed that one last spring, in only three days. No knee pain! Downhill skiing is another favorite activity I can enjoy again, without the need to load up on ibuprofen in the lift line. Knee replacement surgery changed my life for the better, and now at age 64 I look forward to many years of active living. These days I thoroughly enjoy the natural beauty surrounding the base of our Mountain, and treasure the memories I have of attaining her icy crown on foot.

I’m just another success story on Dr. Barrett’s file. Almost four months out I’m happy to have my new knee. Although rehab is still in progress, I can barely catch up with the knee as it walks all by itself – no pain. Lifting or biking I feel free to push myself back into pre-replacement shape, and am glad I went through with the surgery. Yes, I was overall in shape and took care of muscles as much as I could before the procedure. I also was fairly flexible in my joints as I didn’t shy away from stretching. But achieving the rapid recovery and painless and cane-less existence would not be possible without preparation, diligence, and meticulous organization of the surgical team. From day one of initial consultation to final discharge at three months follow up the team worked seamlessly to keep me on the track to success. This included five-star room service at the fifth floor of the Valley Medical Center, attentive nurses, physical therapists, and patient care techs, physician assistant, Jana Flener, and all the rest of the personnel at POA office at Valley MC.
At the risk of becoming a frequent flyer, I’m thoroughly preparing my second knee for a meeting with Dr. Barrett. I highly recommend anyone who is at the end of their suffering from arthritic pain in their knees not to wait any longer and see Dr. Barrett for consultation.
You only have one life and just two knees to deal with its entirety. Make the latter ones click, and the former one count without pain.

I was told by 2 surgeons that I needed both knees replaced but I’d better get them done together as it’s so painful that I’d never come back to get the second one done. I was also told that my activities would be very limited as well with a replaced knee. So with that information, I held off for 5 years as my knees continued to get worse to the point where I stopped nearly all the activities that I loved and even had difficulties standing up.
I knew I had to do something, so my friend’s doctor referred me to Dr. Barrett. It took 3 months to get an appointment, apposed to the single day it took to get in to see the other 2 surgeons. I was glad I’d waited as I was diagnosed and scheduled for a knee replacement for the right knee which was in the worst shape, this was also a 3 month wait. Now I understand the wait as he does perfect work and the whole Valley Medical Center operated like a seasoned pro!
After my surgery, I felt very little pain and was up walking later that day. The pain I’d felt was actually less than what I had prior to surgery. The correct pain medication for me was administered so that I was able to rehab in comfort. I went home after 2 nights and was able to walk upstairs into my split level home. With physical therapy starting the next week and continuing for 4 weeks, I was able to bend and straighten my knee to the recommended degrees.
The real fun began when I was able to drive after a month’s wait. I went back to the gym to take a Pilates class and lift some weights on the 6th week. Much to my dog’s delight, when I got home from the gym I took him for his first walk for 2 hours and have been walking him regularly 2-3 times a week since. I walk in my hilly neighborhood and nearby parks which are very hilly. It was a bit of a struggle at first and had to wear a Velcro brace on my “non-operated” “good” left knee as now it was feeling worse since it was picking up some slack. After a few months this knee has improved as well due to strengthening of the surrounding muscle. On the 7th week, I went to the gym and took a cycling/spinning class for an hour straight and was able to keep up with the class. I must mention that I’ve been taking these gym classes for 11 years and the instructors were well aware of my knee surgery in case of an emergency and I was also able to modifying the class to meet my needs.
So now it is 6 months later I am awaiting knee surgery for my second knee in October. I can hardly wait to have both knees done as I believe I will be able to do all activities I enjoy, but will modify any jumping or running as those are off limits to preserve the life of the implant. I was however surprised that kneeling is no problem for me.
Thanks to Dr. Barrett and team as I have gotten my life back. Now I know what it feels like to once be disabled and then have my health restored. I’m so thankful for quality doctors and the technology needed to make my knees fully functional again.

Anterior approach patient Largo, 67, received hip replacement surgery from POA surgeon Dr. William Barrett. After 5-6 years of knee and back pain, Largo’s hip became a problem. Dr. Barrett had performed orthopedic surgery on her husband and so Largo knew that she wanted Dr. Barrett to perform her hip replacement surgery via anterior approach. She had her hip operation on a Monday and was back to work the following Sunday.
“I’m an avid gardener, welder, and really active outdoors… This procedure realigned my spine. I have no back pain, my knee, which was pain caused by the hip, is gone. I feel like I’m 40.”

Watch this fascinating testimonial video from Proliance Orthodpedic Associates’ patient Betsy, who experienced osteoarthritis to the point of bone on bone. She talks about meeting with POA orthopedic surgeon Dr. William Barrett and how he allowed her to make her own decision about surgery. Her decision vastly improved her quality of life. She was very pleased with her “miraculous” recovery within six weeks and the entire experience as a whole. Thank you Betsy for you kind words. We are so happy that you are feeling significantly better.
“He took time to answer my questions. And he was very kind, really focused on me and what my goals were.”

Though early hip replacement is the new trend
For 64 years you have been a good friend
It is to thank you that I am writing this ode
For you have done your best to carry my load
You have been in London, Paris and French countryside
You have been all o’er North America when I could ride
You hiked 26,000 feet up and down Mt. Rainier
Carrying my body, sleeping bag, tent and gear
With you I have scaled many a hiking trail and mountain high
You have performed reliably atop my thigh
When I carried up to fifty pounds in my pack and pocket
You rolled along in your ball and socket
For many hours a day I had to sit on my glutes
When work required that I leave my pack and boots
There you sat all scrunched up and unoiled
While with patients, desk, and computer I toiled
All those hours in step aerobics you had to perform
Three miles around Greenlake most days was the norm
Every once and awhile you would let me know you were sore
But I mistakenly would just work you some more
When finally, you let me know you’d had enough
That is when things got very tough
I really thought my life was the dregs
When I could not do much atop my legs
Though you only lasted 64 years
I leave you behind without any tears
Historically, we usually did not live so long
So you were not required to be so strong
So for you there is no shame and no blame
For I have only been a little bit lame
You did your best and we had a good run
Now I am looking forward to having more fun!

In my case, I really can’t pin down when my right hip started causing problems. I can, however, pin down when the problem got really bad – November, 2012.
The trek started from Jiri, Nepal, a long day’s car ride to the East of Kathmandu. The idea was to trek eight days to the Khumbu Region, home of Mt. Everest (Sagarmatha to Nepalis). The trek would go on to the Everest Base Camp and include climbing a lower peak, Kala Patthar, where one gets the best view of Sagarmatha herself.
The “trail” from Jiri, however, was a surprise – more rockfall than trail, steeper than expected, and up and over three 11,000 ft passes. By day two, my hip was hurting to the point of requiring a rest day. My pace slowed way down, and, what should have taken eight days, took eleven. Planned side trips were discarded as I slowly and painfully trekked up toward Everest. Rest days for acclimatization helped a little. Pain pills also helped.
By the time I reached a village called Pheriche, three days short of the Everest area, it was time to call it quits. Once you’re up into the Himalayas, there are only two ways to get down – a very expensive helicopter ride or walk. So, walk it was. But by now, I was down to three or four hour days before I had to stop for the day.
I eventually got back to a place called Lukla where I hopped a plane to Kathmandu. Since the trek was cut short, I had to spend extra days in Kathmandu before my flight back to Seattle. And, I didn’t feel like sightseeing.
By the time I arrived in Seattle, it really hurt to walk. I used a cane for almost two weeks after getting home. My family doctor had me do some therapy for a month – no effect at all – and then gave me a referral to Dr. Barrett at Proliance Orthopedic Associates. In my mind, Dr. Barrett was the only choice, since he had replaced my wife’s knee a couple of years earlier. When she was looking for a surgeon, she ran into a totally different attitude with Dr. Barrett and his staff. With other doctors, the focus was always on the things she wouldn’t be able to do any more. With Dr. Barrett, the focus was on all the things she would now be able to do. For example, we ride motorcycles, and my wife rides her own. We mentioned we had a 3500 mile ride planned seven weeks after her operation and asked if that would be a problem. The answer was “no problem” – and we did it!
So, my hip replacement surgery was set up for April 1, 2013. During the preparation, I discovered the obvious advantages to Dr. Barrett’s anterior (front) approach compared to the more traditional posterior or lateral approach. The restrictions after surgery were so much less, and the recovery so much faster, I can’t see why anyone would use a different approach.
The surgery was done on a Monday, and I went home on Wednesday. Shortly thereafter, I began therapy. The most difficult part was learning to walk normally. My Physical Therapist said I’d “gimped” so long that I actually had muscles that weren’t firing. She was very good and very patient twice a week for the next three months. By then, I was back in the gym and feeling great.
It was also about that time that my very understanding wife knew I had “unfinished business” in Nepal. She did, however, have some rules: she had veto power if she didn’t think I was in good enough shape; I had to use both a guide and porter; and I had to promise not to “push it.” So, the planning began. Not sure how things would go, I planned on flying into Lukla from Kathmandu instead of walking in from Jiri. Doing so requires changes to the acclimatization schedule, but I planned enough days to be able to make itinerary changes.
I arrived in Nepal on March 10th and flew to Lukla on March 12th. The trails are a little easier starting from Lukla, but there are still rocks, high steps, and steep climbs. It always takes some days to get into the groove of trekking and being 68 years old and starting at 9,000 ft doesn’t help. It’s hard to breathe and body parts ache. But one thing never ached or hurt – my right hip. In fact, I never noticed it.
So, I “slogged” up into the Khumbu through the most amazing scenery and clear air. I recognized the trail all the way up to Pheriche. From then on, it was all new – all the way up to a place called Gorak Shep at 17,000 ft., the last lodges before Everest Base Camp. After spending the night, where it was so cold the sunscreen froze, my guide and I started our way up the black “hill” across a valley.
On March 23rd, I stood on top of Kala Patthar at 18,204 ft, less than one year after having my hip replaced. The view across the Khumbu glacier with Everest on the left and Nuptse on the right was amazing. I called my wife on a satellite phone and took a picture for Dr. Barrett.
The next day, I went up to Everest Base Camp and stood at the base of the Khumbu Icefall. After one more night at Gorak Shep, I started down. And, going down was so much faster – harder on the knees and balls of the feet, but faster.
No more unfinished business in Nepal. And I never did notice my hip.

Below is a great testimonial video from our patient Fran! When asked why she chose the anterior approach for her hip replacement surgery, Fran said, “I knew it would be less invasive, faster recovery time, and would allow me to get back to doing the things I love to do.” We’re so glad that we could help Fran with her hip pain and that she is now part of the POA extended family!

I am enthusiastic to share my patient experience with Dr. Barrett and Proliance Orthopedic Associates, and to inform other people who have an interest in seeking the best care for their hip related issues.
I am an experienced war horse, so to speak, as I have experienced both posterior and anterior approaches to hip replacement. In 2001, I had the posterior approach surgery on my left hip due to a deformity. My research for this surgery began in 1983, and took place in Australia nearly 20 years later. Because the right hip had compensated for the left and was also somewhat abnormal, the cartilage ultimately wore out from the right hip as well. This became increasingly debilitating over time. As an avid sailor, my joy of experiencing the feeling of an unstable surface beneath my feet during a rough sea turned to agony due to increasingly excruciating pain in this hip. After a particular two day sailing trip, the pain became too much and soon afterward, I reached out to Dr. Barrett.
After experiencing the recuperation process from the posterior approach a little more than 10 years earlier, I had some trepidation top of mind. After meeting Dr. Barrett and his staff, these concerns soon dissipated. Dr. Barrett relates very well to his patients and deals with the facts clearly, discusses every detail and professionally supports the patient’s decision-making, all the while providing the information efficiently and respectfully. Dr. Barrett demonstrates empathy in attitude. His patient manner is exceedingly good and as a post-surgery patient, I have nothing but the highest admiration for his technical proficiency. I would also like to commend the communication management between the surgeon and the patient’s family. In measurable terms, with a 10 being high, I rate this consideration an 11 out of 10! The entire process from start to finish throughout the organization has been seamless – a fantastic experience. Every aspect of care and management, from reception to discharge, has exceeded my expectations.
As a patient, the difference between the posterior and anterior approach to hip replacement surgery is simply worlds apart. There has been substantially less disruption to my muscle tissues in the anterior approach. My right hip feels more stable 6 weeks after surgery than my left hip felt after 6 months with the posterior approach. With my most recent surgery I was out of the hospital in less than 24 hours. The threshold of pain, with 10 being high, from the posterior approach was 10 out of 10. In contrast, the threshold of pain from the anterior approach was never more than 1 out of 10. The quality of the two procedures is as dissimilar as is chalk to cheese. My quality of life is back at a faster and in a much greater measure. The comfort of my walking within only 7 weeks regulates the surgery mostly to a distant memory. The medication to manage pain was minimal and very short term. With my recent procedure from Dr. Barrett, the infection management has equally been top drawer! With my posterior procedure, I experienced infection which had to be managed with antibiotics at post surgery but there were no infection issues with this surgery. I would compare my pre and post care at the same level as I experienced with cardiac care at the Cleveland Clinic, high praise indeed for this organization.
People who know me may describe me as having an aptitude for being critical, but with this experience, I have only praise. Choosing Dr. Barrett for my right hip surgery was a no brainer. I am well expecting a sailing trip before the end of this winter with, hopefully, 20 mile and rougher winds in the offing.

Dear Dr. Barrett,
I am so thankful for your talented surgical skills. My life has changed in so many wonderful ways since June 17th. The following are some of those ways: I can go for walks with my husband. I can actually enjoy washing dishes at the kitchen sink (washing dishes has never been my favorite activity. I think you did something magical to me when you replaced my knee!). I can do lots of cooking for family and friends and entertain in our home. I can work in my garden and greenhouse and take care of my bonsai collection. I can drive my car, a terrific Honda Civic with a sun roof. I was able to stay several days at Sun Mountain Lodge in Winthrop in October and climb lots of stairs. I will be visiting Maui, Oahu and Lanai (on my bucket list) in February. I’ll be flying to Chino Valley Arizona in the spring to visit our daughter and son-in-law. I‘ll be on a two-week cruise around the Greek Islands in September 2014. I can walk into Canlis on my birthday without a wheelchair, walker or cane. I can hardly wait!
My new mantra is: bless orthopedic surgeons everywhere, especially mine.
Sincerely,
// Ann
Thanks from a Mountain Climber
Dr. Barrett performed total knee replacements on both of my knees. They are not like original equipment, but they do work well enough for me to do this!

The Comeback Kid
I climbed Mt Adams on Friday, July 19, 2013.
This was a big event for me for 2 reasons. I am the “comeback kid” as I have had bilateral knee replacements and two rotator cuff surgeries in the last 3 years. At 62, I wanted to show myself (and my family) that I could still “do it.” Second, I climbed Mt Adams with my 14 fourteen old children. We all made it to the top! They were tired and I was exhausted.
Please let Dr. Barrett, Jana, and Katie know how much I appreciate everything that they did for me. It is hard to believe that it is 18 months since my surgery. You folks were the best. I will not forget you!
Warm regards,
// Don
Dear Dr. Barrett and Team,
You and your associates are my super heroes! Last week, during my vacation in Hawaii, I was able to enjoy hiking in the outdoors – 12 weeks from the time of my surgery! I hiked 2 miles in a canyon on one day and 2 days later hiked 4 miles along the coast. My recovery from the hikes were related to fatigue and not from knee pain. That was a first for me in a very long time – no knee pain! I cannot thank you enough for the quality of your work and helping me get back to a healthy lifestyle! You are amazing!
With much appreciation and gratitude,
// Denise
Cliff, a VOA patient of Dr. Barrett who underwent bilateral knee replacements has documented his process via social media. Below is a video of Cliff’s progress 4 days after surgery. Yes, 4 days!
Cliff made another video 12 days later. In this video, Cliff shares what he felt 12 days prior to the surgery. He remembers walking to the mall and how painful it was to walk straight. 12 days after his surgery, Cliff looks healthy and has made amazing progress! Watch the video below to hear about Cliff’s experience between those 12 days.
“Short video of my progress 12 days post op for bilateral knees. I believe my recovery is due to my hard work that I did to have the exceptional strength and stamina that I knew I would need for recovery. I have never had pain above a 4 while in the hospital and I am now working on cutting meds out. I usually take 2 oxycodene before bed and 1 tablet when needed during the day. My pain level while at home has usually been below a 2. I have my own martial art school and have been teaching over 33 years. I think the mindset was a huge factor in my recovery. I decided that I would wake up from the surgery with a smile and embrace the process with a positive attitude.
– Cliff
We also got an interview in with Cliff, which can be found below:
Martial Arts instructor, Cliff Lenderman, describes his quality of life prior to having bilateral knee replacement surgery on both knees as “bad”.
To compensate for the severe pain he felt in both knees due to severe Arthritis and a torn Meniscus, Cliff would hunch forward to compensate, which would result in aggravating back and hip pain as well. Walking became impossible for him.
Mr. Lenderman consulted with a retired doctor and asked him to provide names of three surgeons who he would select if he had to get his own knees replaced. The doctor recommended Dr. Barrett. After researching information regarding Valley Orthopedic Associates and Dr. Barrett, as well as receiving additional recommendations, Cliff met with Dr. Barrett for a consultation. He was impressed with Dr. Barrett and his staff and made the decision to prepare for surgery. Mr. Lenderman then began training for the surgery late in November in order to make certain he was physically strong for the surgery.
Since the surgery on January 28th, Cliff says his life is greatly improved. He was up and walking 4 days after surgery. After 7 days he was back at work. In three weeks, he was able to attend Hot Yoga classes, went bike riding, and continues his work as a Martial Arts trainer and will be married in April. Cliff is filled with gratitude over the results from his surgery, and the great care he received from Dr. Barrett and the supportive staff at Valley Orthopedic Associates.

Dear Dr. Barrett,
Thank you for taking my husband under your care and facilitating a very successful left total hip replacement outcome.
During his follow-up visit you asked him how he viewed his recovery with the anterior approach. His response was very positive, but focused on not having to endure weeks of hip precautions.
As you know he had his right hip replaced ten years ago, utilizing a minimally invasive posterior approach at the University of Washington.
As a wife, post- op care giver and former nurse, I would like to say he did not begin to state the difference between the two procedures. With this surgery I did not have to constantly be a nag regarding hip precautions, and despite Jim being ten years older, his recovery and ability to resume normal activities took about two weeks versus 8-10 weeks. There simply is no comparison!
If you notice a sudden increase in appointment requests, it is because I am singing your praises and telling all; for joint replacement there is no better Surgeon.
Very Sincerely,
// Wendy
I had total hip replacement April 3, 2012. I hit the slopes for the first time today since surgery. What a difference this new hip makes! Dr. William Barrett you are the best!!!!!!

January, 2013
I am 59 years old and have suffered for years with Oesteoarthritis in my knee due to sports injuries. I tried to prolong the life of the knee with cortisone and viscous shots but finally reached a point where my quality of life had deteriorated. I researched surgeons and made an appointment to see Dr. William Barrett. I am so glad I did! I was nervous and scared to be considering a total knee replacement but Dr. Barrett put me immediately at ease. He was friendly yet very professional in explaining my options. I am now 6 weeks post op and I am thrilled with the results. I am riding 5-6 miles on my recumbent bike, going up stairs without hopping or baby steps, and not enduring that knife stabbing pain in my knee. The whole process from Dr. Barrett’s professionalism, Valley Medical excellent facilities and staff, and the staff in the Joint Clinic has been wonderful. I am looking forward to traveling this year without pain pills and a walking stick! Thank you, Dr. Barrett!
// Dinah
Dear Dr. Barrett,
I just got back from my Physical Therapy session. I walked in, and I walked out. The other day, I stood at a window, (without having to use a walking aid or lean on someone) and watched the world go by. (I don’t remember the last time I was able to do that…a year…maybe more). I no longer have to go up and down stairs sideways, and yesterday I was able to put on my pants while standing up.
These may seem like insignificant things, but they mean everything to me. When you replaced my left knee, in Oct., my life changed. I was completely disabled when I went in for surgery, but when I came out my mobility had returned.
When you replaced my right knee in Jan., my whole world changed. You have given me the gift of walking. I can’t express my gratitude for what you have done. When my friends saw me walk, unaided, for the first time, a cheer went up, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. We all thank you for what you’ve done Dr. Barrett.
Sincerely,
// Deb
Today marks my one week post op anniversary for my left hip surgery! I am amazed my pain is gone only tenderness in incision site. I’m an old 70 year retired R.N. and recognize an outstanding medical office-which I found at your office from my first appointment! Dr. Barrett was an astute listener and great patient teacher – great written information to take home. When I became more disabled walking he scheduled my surgery for 11/13 Thank God – I spent a couple months in constant pain except for swimming water exercise everyday-until my surgery. Katie is an outstanding communicator with patients, always promptly returns calls and answers questions with her great voice-upbeat sincere—and so efficient! She’s a great healer just with her attitude and voice! –And Jana – talk about a smart, direct, vivacious partner for Dr Barrett. She patiently answered all my pre-op questions then visited in hospital daily with her positive and direct attitude. She told me I’d do my 18 stairs to bed my first night home- I didn’t believe her – but so true!! You have created a “Cadillac” orthopedic experience with your office staff and hospital nurses- PT-OT’s and aides. I’m so blessed t be the beneficiary of your expertise.
Forever Gratefully Yours,
// Sallee
“My husband was going to have both knees replaced at the same time, pretty scary stuff. We live in Anchorage, but had a friend recommend Dr. William Barrett. We contacted his office and had xrays, etc. sent down to Seattle through our doctor, did all the paperwork needed, made the surgical appointment, then showed up the Friday before the next Monday procedure. Dr. Barrett put us both at ease. He was both professional and “real” all at once. No God complex, very down to earth, taking the time to answer all of our questions. His assistant, Kayte, was also so great during all the paperwork through email. We felt confidant going into the operation with Dr. Barrett, even though we’d just met him. The surgery went well, Dr. Barrett kept me informed of the progress of the operation and all went smoothly. The facility in Renton was outstanding. One whole floor devoted to orthopedic patients, all the staff were specifically trained for this and they were all wonderful. The hospital stay was only 3 days, then we stayed in town for another 2 weeks, going back and forth for physical therapy and doctor appointments. Progress was monitored well, as was pain management.
This is a very rough procedure, having 2 knees replaced at the same time. My husband worked hard to recover and Dr. Barrett’s staff, physical therapy, and Dr. Barrett himself all worked tremendously hard to achieve the results that were achieved. Today, my husband is glad that he went through the operation, and the knees, while not like they were when he was young, are much, much better!!
Thanks to all the staff at Dr. Barrett’s office, Proliance Orthopedics.”

After years of painful arthritis keeping them from the activities they enjoy in life, VOA patients share their joint replacement journeys.
Edward James, a retired high school principal, lived with the pain of arthritis for nearly four years before deciding on surgery. He had his right hip replaced on March 31, 2008.
“When you can’t do the things you used to do, you start to get depressed,” James said. “You don’t think it’s that bad, but it really is. You get used to the pain.”
James researched the procedure online but it was word of mouth that made him decide on VOA and Dr. Barrett.
“They are well thought of in the community,” he said.
Before arthritis limited his activities, James was fairly active playing basketball, tennis and racquet ball. He completed master gardener training 12 weeks before surgery and now he’s back in his garden.
“Being retired, there’s lots for me to do,” James said. “Most of all, I can bend over and tie my shoes. I couldn’t do that before. I have a lot more flexibility.”

Even when military retiree John Clements was living with bone-on-bone pain in his right knee, he started his day at 6 a.m. and kept going until about 10 p.m. He lived with arthritic deterioration in his knee for 20 years.
Clements had his right knee replaced on June 23, 2008. He interviewed three orthopedic surgeons before deciding on Dr. Barrett and VOA.
“Dr. Barrett is the only one that asked me questions about my lifestyle before and what I expected to do after the operation. He was the only one interested in what I had been doing and what I wanted to continue to do,” Clements said.
Clements owns a construction electrician business. He is also a firearms instructor and works with the police, military and civilians.
“I’m very active doing many, many things. The thing that was limiting was the immobility in my leg. Now, I only have to work on strengthening my leg.” Clements said.
In addition to continuing to strengthen his replaced right knee, Clements is working on strengthening his left knee to prepare for replacement in October. If the left knee is built up before surgery, the recovery time should be faster.
After going through his first knee replacement surgery, Clements had this advice for anyone considering joint replacement:
“If you’re used to pain and you like pain, then don’t do it. If you want to get rid of the pain, have your knee replaced. There is no pain like bone rubbing on bone going through your body.”
Clements also said that after his surgery, his flexibility is coming back.
“There is no doubt in my mind I can have good flexibility and range of motion,” he said. “I’m not going to skip a beat.”

As you can see I didn’t get a hip replacement just to play golf. In 2011, I’ve climbed over 44 trees, starting in May 2011, three months after surgery. This activity is all possible because of you Dr. Barrett and staff. Special thanks to Kayte for her professionalism and friendship. I will always be grateful to you Dr. Barrett for taking on my case with Dr. Routt and Dr. Tran at Harborview.
My life will never be the same, but it is better because of the people I’ve met on this journey.
Forever in our thoughts,

“I am 64 years of age and on February 21, 2012 I had an Anterior Approach Total Hip Replacement at Valley Medical Center. Choosing the right orthopedic surgeon to me was very important to a successful surgery and recovery. My primary physician referred me to Dr. William Barrett because he uses the “anterior” method and is regarded as the best. He also has led Valley Medical Center to be the leaders in “state-of-the-art” surgical techniques. When I met with him I found him to be personable, encouraging, trusting, passionate and most of all very knowledgeable. He took the time to answer all my concerns and questions and I felt I understood the procedures and recovery. When I left his office I felt confident I had the best orthopedic surgeon.
I can’t say enough about Dr. Barrett’s Joint Center team of nurses and therapists. From the time I woke up from surgery until the time of check out, the joint center staff was attentive and always friendly. From the nurses to the people who brought my meals (which were delicious), all were fantastic. Also a plus the rooms are like 4 star hotels. I had very little pain and was only in the hospital 2 days. My recovery at home has been very smooth with no problems. It has been 5 weeks and I am walking on my own. I highly recommend Dr Barrett for hip joint surgery.
THANK YOU to Dr. Barrett and your dedicated staff.”

On May 19, 2008, Geoffrey had his left hip replaced after living with bone-on-bone pain for almost two years.
“All of the cartilage was gone,” Geoffrey said. “I ran track and raced jet skis. I just wore it out,” Newing said.
Like Edward James, Geoffrey’s joint replacement journey was a positive one. He was back to work two weeks after surgery and had no pain. Eight weeks after his surgery, Geoffrey vacationed in France.
“The only thing that hurt was my feet from all the walking,” he said. “I can’t believe I recovered so quickly. It was just tremendous.”
Although Newing recognizes the majority of people view hip replacement as major surgery, for him “the outcome of what I went through is minimal to get my quality of life back and do the things I enjoy doing.”

I can’t say enough wonderful things about Dr. Barthel and the entire Proliance Orthopedic Associates staff. I’ve never experienced such thoughtful and compassionate care from a medical facility like I have at Proliance Orthopedic Associates.
In 2007 I sustained a work related injury and after that my right wrist was never the same. I would experience shooting pain and swelling. Over the years the pain continued to get worse and it started affecting my life. I could no longer do the things I once loved. Throughout the years I would seek out various doctors and each time was told they couldn’t find a cause for the pain since my X-Rays came back clean. One even suggested I was imagining the pain.
My regular doctor suggested I call Proliance Orthopedic Associates and see Dr. Barthel because she herself had her hand surgery done there. Right away I knew Dr. Barthel was different, she was so compassionate and undeterred when both X-Rays and an MRI didn’t yield enough results. After I had a CT scan we found the problem and I was scheduled for surgery. Finally! Someone found the problem!
My surgery in July went wonderfully and since then, I’ve been going to Physical Therapy located in the same building as the Proliance Orthopedic Associates office in Covington. My last appointment is coming up and I can honestly say I am sad to say goodbye to the amazing staff. Both my husband and I will miss them all.
Dr. Barthel and the Proliance Orthopedic Associates staff have given me my life back and I could not be more grateful. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart!

Dear Dr. Traci Barthel,
I’ve never had someone in your position help me like you did. I want to express my appreciation for everything you did to save my finger. When I came to you I was convinced it would have to be amputated. You gave me hope and saved me. You went above and beyond what I expected and helped me. Not once did you look or talk down to me or make me feel inferior. I’ve never met a doctor like you before that sympathized with my problem and pain until you.
Doctors always tried to tell me that something didn’t hurt when it did. You made me feel that you were helping me from the kindness of your heart and you really cared. This made me feel special and important. You are a credit to your profession. I think all doctors should be just like you with your kind heart, knowledge, and bedside manner. You always put me at ease right from the start. You are truly one of a kind. Never before have I written a letter like this thanking anyone before now. I felt that your actions need to be acknowledged and I want to personally thank you for all you did for me. You are appreciated. Dr. Traci Barthel, you are the bomb!

I was lucky to have had a wonderful experience today spending it in the VOA Surgery Center. From the time upon admitting, to surgery, recovery, and discharge the staff was so caring, kind, and compassionate about the patient, and the procedure to be done. Thank you VOA, and to you Dr. Barthel for a great surgical experience.
When we asked Rebecca how our patient was doing, this was her response:
At home resting and relaxing, doing well. I am also happy to say nurse Cindy in post-op has already called this morning to check up on me. What great service! Thank you.

I want to tell how much I’ve waited for my hand back. To help people, like you do doctor, it means so much to me to use my hand as a helping hand for others. I’ve prayed for this all year. Doing everything one handed, has been challenging.
I haven’t given up on my spirit. So my joy, meeting you and working with staff people at Proliance Orthopedic Associates from intake, to appointment desk, the Casting room and everyone that makes it run smoothly. You have made my experiences, reinsuring for a safe journey to healing. So I’m wishing all at Proliance Orthopedic Associates, wonderful holidays.

Getting a hip replaced is no easy deal, but having it done by Dr. Susan Cero of Proliance Orthopedic Associates made it go so smoothly and it was an overall great experience. From the first appointment, to the pre-op, to the surgery, to the post-op appointments, everyone was so friendly, accommodating and efficient. And I believe that begins with the doctors and surgeons in charge. Thank you Dr. Cero! I will happily recommend you to anyone and everyone that possibly needs their hip replaced!

I had a hip replacement in September and am doing great. Dr.Cero and her staff were exceptional. Dr. Cero requested that the surgery and recovery would be a lot better if I was to lose some weight. I took her advice and extended my surgery a few months so I could diet. I lost 61 pounds by the time I had my surgery. My recovery was a lot better than I expected. The weight loss expedited my recovery time. I want to thank Dr. Cero and her staff. They were exceptional and I would greatly recommend her. Thank you so much.

I had full knee replacement surgery on my right knee by Dr. Susan Cero in July 2017. I am extremely pleased with the results, it now has been six weeks, and I am able to get back on my bike trainer to rebuild my muscle tone and prepare for my left knee replacement in October.
Dr. Cero and her team are highly professional and take a personal interest in your healing and wellbeing. She is straightforward when discussing the procedure and potential outcome if you adhere to the PT regiment, which I did.
I’m enjoying doing activities that I was unable to do before the surgery. Thanks again Dr. Cero!

I had a really good experience with Dr. Cero and her staff. It was fantastic and I’ve had no problems since. I had so much pain when I went in and I wondered why I didn’t have this surgery three years ago. Everyone was really helpful.
I am in no pain now. I can sit, walk, put my socks on, tie my shoe, climb, walk the dog, and sleep. I couldn’t do those things before. For 2.5 years, I had a problem. Dr. Cero did one X-Ray and knew I needed a hip replacement. I have a doctor that knows what she is doing and her staff is great. It’s been the best thing I’ve ever done!

I am writing this letter to thank Proliance Orthopedic Associates and Dr. Susan Cero for making my joint replacement surgery a complete success. The surgery was performed on May 18, 2015. The outcome is much better than expected. The joint replacement surgery has been a life-changing event for me. After 5 years of seeking relief from the pain in my hip, I am finally free to enjoy an active lifestyle without the limitations caused by arthritis.
Dr. Cero took the time to understand my situation and concerns. She made an effort to establish trust and a personal connection with me as a patient. The experience was much more positive than my previous encounter with a service provider at a different health care facility.
I could not be more pleased with the professional doctor-patient relationship, level of care, facility, support staff and the outcome of the joint replacement surgery provided by Dr. Susan Cero and Proliance Orthopedic Associates.
Thank you,
Jana T.

Dear Dr. Cero,
It has been a long journey from shattered clavicle to age division National Champion! Thank you & your team at Proliance Orthopedic Associates so much for being my partner in recovery!
I appreciated our discussions about the pro’s and con’s regarding surgery and your honest assessments of rehabilitation time tables.
I had a non-displaced broken clavicle in 1992 and it was 100% in 12 weeks. This time around was plate and screws which you accurately informed me would recover at approximately 10% per month even though I wanted it healed up yesterday.
Best wishes in 2015 and hopefully all our future communication will be for coffee or a high five after a big win!! If it does goes bad I know you’ll be there to put me back together!
Thanks again,
// Kerry
Dear Dr. Cero,
Just wanted to let you know that my surgery is just beautiful. My doctor, who is Dr. Hatfied, that had done my hip was very pleased with the x-ray. He said you did a real good job. How about that? He took more x-rays last week and its healing beautifully. I now put a little pressure on my foot when I walk with the walker. It feels great. I go to the swimming pool every day and walk in there and exercise my knee- Can’t thank you enough for doing such a wonderful job. You are a super doctor. I told you I would let you know. Again many thanks. It’s great to be home.
Your patient from Arizona

I visited the Proliance office in severe pain. Forty years ago, I had been in a terrible car accident as a teenager where my hip was dislocated and had been walking with a limp for the past 10 years. It was getting harder to ride my bicycle and just getting around without pain. It might have been the hip, might have been the back or a combination. I wasn’t sure.
When I went to Proliance Orthopedic Associates, I was treated with compassion and medical expertise. Doctors reviewed my x-rays and MRI. It was great when Dr. Cero said to me: “You deserve a new hip!” She performed the surgery and followed up with me. After 8 weeks, I was walking without the hip pain and was looking forward to getting back on my bike.
In addition, the Joint Center had a very amazing, positive healing atmosphere. All the staff was genuinely interested in my care and success.
Thanks to the expert surgery and follow-up of Dr. Susan Cero and her very kind, helpful associates.

Dr. Cero has successfully operated on my youngest daughter Rebecca, my wife Lyn, and me on five occasions. I had three “industrial incidents” that created much pain in my left knee on one occasion and my right knee on 2 occasions. After surgery I felt like a million dollars! I’m so pleased to be able to walk pain free, and there are virtually no visible scars on either knee.
In January of 2012 Dr. Cero replaced my left hip, and in June of 2013 she replaced my right hip. These were a direct result of arthritis that I inherited from my mother. Both surgeries went perfectly and now, in October of 2013, I have no pain in either hip.
The skill and ability that Dr. Cero possesses is nothing short of amazing! To say Dr. Cero is a gifted surgeon would be an understatement. I can only imagine the countless hours it took to become such a very accomplished surgeon. In my opinion, Dr. Cero is most definitely an angel sent from heaven, and I have been blessed to be her patient.

Today I had an appointment with Dr. Cero. It has been 6 weeks since I had a total knee replacement on my right knee. At this appointment, Dr. Cero was very pleased with my progress and mobility, and lack of pain. The physical therapists are also amazed at how well I’m doing in such short a time.
My right knee began bothering me about a year and a half ago with severe pain in the joint and shooting pains down the front of the leg. My doctor put me in PT, but the problem continued to get worse. An X-Ray was taken and showed no cartilage in my right knee, and about half in my left. Then an MRI was done that also showed torn meniscus in both knees. My right knee was the worst of the two.
I met Dr. Cero when I brought my daughter to see her for a hip problem. Her kind and compassionate manner with my daughter really stunned me, as other doctors would not offer any hope for my daughter. She did, explaining what my daughter needed to do, and then a new hip would be done for her. We both left in tears, knowing that there was hope for her to have this problem fixed. I told my husband about Dr. Cero, and he suggested I go to her for my knee… Which I did.
Dr. Cero replaced my right knee on Aug. 26, 2013. Today I am pain free, and have more mobility than ever possible a year ago. Before surgery, I could not spend time with my grandkids…we have 5, 4 of whom are under the age of 12. No zoo trips, no overnight stays, no shopping, no beach time, etc. My quality of life was getting worse, and I was getting depressed, spending hours in the recliner icing my knees. I could not attend their baseball games, dance recitals, or horse riding events. I could not drive more than 10 minutes without such severe pain I would be in tears. I could not care for my youngest grandson who is a delightful toddler. I was no help to any of them, and missing out on so very much. I finally decided to get this knee replaced… I’d had enough.
Today I am almost dancing!! I am on my way to being an involved grandma once again! I can drive, shop, play, and walk without a limp or pain! The holidays are coming, and I will enjoy them with my family without worrying about how far I have to drive or walk. I don’t need handicap parking anymore either. I’m loving my new knee, and as my leg continues to heal, I know it will grow in strength and ability.
Dr. Cero and her entire staff are absolutely wonderful to work with. I had every phone call returned on the same day, and every encounter was encouraging and helpful. The surgery was a complete success, and thanks to their encouragement and guidance, I will enjoy life again. That recliner stays empty most of the time now…because I’m too busy enjoying life again!
Thanks for letting me share my story,
// Willa
Thank you so much Dr. Cero for putting me back together.

To: Valley Orthopedic Associates
Care of: Dr. Cero,
Joint replacement is a serious decision in one’s life. But when you consider the pain of bone on bone and the quality of life you give up every day you put this decision off you will never regret having it done. Getting used to pain is really ‘giving up on your activities and quality of life.’ You get depressed without even knowing it because you aren’t doing what you enjoy because of pain. The reality is you don’t even recognize what you have given up prior to the surgery until after surgery and you get YOUR own life back.
For me, researching the procedure was a must in order to best mentally and physically prepare myself for this big decision. Next came researching doctors, their process and their reputation in the field and community. Last but certainly not least was investigating the hospital the orthopedic surgeon chose to use for operations.
I selected Valley Orthopedic Associates, Dr. Susan Cero for my surgeon. It was the best decision of my life. I had bilateral knee surgery, both knees replaced at the same time. Her professional bedside manner, the process she subscribes to for pre surgery preparation and post surgery care is phenomenal. She wanted to know my lifestyle before surgery and my expectations after surgery. This made a huge impact on me and definitely helped me make my decision. At 4 weeks after surgery I was walking without a walker or cane and back on the road to a wonderful recovery. The truth is Dr. Cero was right, what you put into your recovery is what you will get out of it! I would do this surgery again in a minute IF I had to and I’d request Dr. Cero and Valley Orthopedic Associates. My only regret is I waited for too many years before having it done.
Thanks Dr. Cero for giving me back a quality of life I have been missing.
Sincerely,
// Pat
Dr. Cero,
When you gave me my new knee, you took ten years off of my age and my daily life and outlook improved. My wife Betty, daughter Pat, and granddaughter DeDe were all relieved. Your wonderful, warm conversation gave us so much information about what to expect that I decided to move forward with the operation. Your staff and the hospital are so caring and cohesive. Dr. Vanbodegom has always recommended doctors who are good, and he certainly sent me to one that is. Thanks more than I can say for a wonderful human being like you.

Dear Dr. Cero,
You are an excellent surgeon. Both of my surgeries, on my leg and arm went smoothly. For a woman turning 80, I give you a lot of the credit. You prepared both my family and me for both of the surgeries and gave me excellent care afterwards. Your bedside manner has been warm and straightforward.
Thank you Dr. Cero, for not only the great care you gave me, but also for taking the time to share a bit about yourself.
Sincerely,

Dear Dr. Cero. Our Hero!!
I have tried many times to find the words to say how much you have improved George's ability to walk. Every step he takes I think of you with excitement. How can I express our profound gratitude in the future of George's freedom to walk. With gratitude our hearts are happy as we live the rest of our life together. A great big thank you, they are such simple words but they mean a lot. Georges 82nd birthday is the 24th what a gift you have given him and me!
Forever thankful

As someone from out of town, I emailed and got a fast response and set up an appointment. My back was so bad I could hardly walk four steps. Dr. Chilczuk had me x-rayed, and he knew and cared about my pain. I had to run the gamut before I could get an injection, but I was able to get one before I started the drive back to Cleveland. It made it possible for me to make the trip. I have more ahead of me and I wish Dr. Chilczuk, could be my doctor. But too far away for that. To anyone in the Seattle or Kent area needing an orthopedic doctor, this is the place to come.

My first injection was harder, longer, and much more painful than I anticipated. Apparently, I have a humungous bone spur and Dr. Chilczuk had to figure out the best over, under, or around route to the nerve root. It worked! I had a GREAT response for over 8 months with 60%-plus improvement! I could walk without dragging my leg, started riding my bike again and did garden work effortlessly. So I went back… tentatively. This time was so much easier – Dr. Chilczuk was so attentive to the previous pain response, adding extra analgesic, doing a slow injection, and using his previous “mapping” for my compromised spine. Great support all around; every one of the nurses and techs are kind, compassionate and they know their business – you always feel well cared for. Thank you all, from a patient who really appreciates what you do.

I’ve been told I have an “old back” and it leaves me with a very gimpy left leg. But before I resort to the inevitable surgery, I have had two epidural steroid injections done by Dr. Chilczuk. I had the pleasure of being a patient of Dr. Howe’s. Formerly in the Nursing/Surgical field 10+ years at Swedish and 10+ years in a Supervisory position, seeing the rapid change in healthcare, I was amazed by the kindness, compassion, and support received by Dr. Howe. Dr. Howe was genuinely concerned about my physical well-being while providing guidance and advice relating to my health conditions. The personal attention given by telephone call was not expected and extremely appreciated. I highly recommend Dr. Howe and Proliance Orthopedic Surgeons for excellent quality patient care.
Dr. Howe’s generosity and support was greatly appreciated!

I was referred to Dr. Howe by Dr. Wagner at the UW. I had been seeing Dr. Chapman at UW originally for several years because of my lower back issues. He wanted to do two surgeries a week a part fussing T7 thru S1. I would have lost 40% mobility having this surgery. Because he was no longer doing surgery at the UW Dr. Wagner suggested I see Dr. Howe. His comment to me was if his wife needed surgery he would send her to Dr. Howe. Hence I immediately made an appointment to see Dr. Howe. I was so lucky to have been referred to him since he fussed L4, L5 and did a laminectomy on L2 L3. I was in extreme pain when I saw Dr. Howe finding it difficult to sit, sleep or walk. He was very assuring and made room for me in his surgery schedule. I had less pain the day after surgery than I had before surgery. I was amazed at the short recovery from the surgery and the relief with no pain in my back which I had been fighting for years. Now at 10 months out I’m able to do a lot of the farm work and house work I was not able to perform for several years. The care from the whole staff at Valley General was amazing. I feel fortunate that Dr. Howe was the doctor I was referred to and that he did my surgery. I would highly recommend him and have referred several people to him.

In my early 50’s my back started bothering me. I had had a serious injury in my early 30’s and thought I may need to update my exercise routine. so, I saw a physical therapist and got regular massages. I did not experience any relief after doing PT for a couple of months and then I made the mistake of listening to co-workers and tried chiropractic care. That was a huge waste of time and money and the pain in my back continued to worsen. It lasted longer and got more intense as the months passed. Finally, I went to my internist (Dr. Narendra) who recommended I see Dr. Howe. He informed me I had inherited a disease from my mother called spinal-stenosis and that I needed fusion surgery. I was convinced that surgery would leave me permanently disabled and there was some other approach I had yet to try. So I tried other physical and massage therapists along with new exercises but the pain continued to worsen. I remember having a conversation with my husband sharing with him my biggest fear that so I may loose my ability to walk. At that point, I decided I had no choice, I needed to have the surgery to see if I could at least be somewhat mobile. It was amazing. I went in at 8:00 in the morning and by 2:00 I was walking. And more importantly, without pain, for the first time in years. I couldn’t believe it. My surgery lasted approximately 3 hours and Dr. Howe put in 2 rods and 4 screws and yet afterwards I felt better than I had in years.
It’s been two years since I have had my surgery. And I can say that Dr. Howe and the surgery allowed me to reclaim my life. After the first year, my husband and I were blessed with our first grandchild. I feel good enough to hold him, dance with him, play with him, and even sing with him (note: my singing ability did not improve with the surgery). Last summer (marking 1 1/2 years after surgery) I walked a half marathon with my cousin, and this fall we celebrated our 38th wedding anniversary in Spain and it wasn’t with a wheel chair. We walked all over the place and I wore everyone out.
I am so happy I had the surgery. It sounds corny, but I really feel Dr. Howe gave me another lease on life and I plan to take full advantage of it. My only regret is the time I wasted thinking there was a different option. I am eternally grateful to Dr. Howe.

I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Howe and his staff. I came to Dr. Howe after being told by two other surgeons that nothing was wrong with my back, and I just had a bulging disk and after injections, it would heal itself. I did countless hours of physical therapy, injections that didn’t work, and missed lots of work and time with my family. I couldn’t do anything really. It was affecting my life. You never know how much it can affect your life until something like this brings you to a stop!
My mom is a patient of Dr. Howe’s, and after she had her surgery with him, she said I needed to see him as well. She had amazing results, and said she was blown away by his compassion and care. So I made a call to the office. The staff was super friendly, and Dr. Howe was very knowledgeable, caring, upfront, and had answer’s fast.
About a month after seeing him and getting my MRI, i was having the surgery that I needed and should have had years ago. He told me he was amazed at how well I tolerated the pain, and how strong I was. I didn’t know how bad it was until I came to him. Now I am about 80% pain free. I can walk again without pain, I can do activities with my children and husband, I can work again without missing days, I HAVE MY LIFE BACK! I owe it all to Dr. Howe and his amazing staff. Thank you, Dr. Howe, for giving me my life back. You will never know how much you have helped me and made me believe again! I will recommend everyone to your office.

“After three decades of reoccurring back problems involving infrequent but sometimes serious sciatic nerve pain, I finally decided that I needed to find a doctor whom I could trust to give me a professional and unbiased analysis of my condition. Earlier in 2012 Dr. Christopher Howe had operated on a friend of mine whose condition was considerably worse than mine, and this friend had nothing but praise for Dr. Howe’s surgical skills. I was also told that Dr. Howe would listen to what I had to say—that he was truly concerned about the welfare of his patients and was exceptionally conscientious in this regard. This helped give me the confidence that I needed to entrust my health to a specialist I did not otherwise know. A recent 3-month stretch with what I thought might be a deteriorating condition had left me resigned to the likelihood of surgery, and I wanted a top-notch surgeon if an operation was going to be required.
At Dr. Howe’s recommendation I had an MRI performed as a first step. I live in a remote area of Alaska, so the MRI was performed in Juneau. (This will explain why I did not rate all areas in this review.) Dr. Howe had provided the hospital in Juneau with the necessary information to perform the procedure. He then analyzed the MRI results, and I received the professional opinion that I was seeking…with every bit as much (and more) of that genuine personal attention that I had been told I could expect from him. I was fully prepared to hear him say that surgery was the recommended next step. Dr. Howe’s specialty is surgery, and I had already informed him that I would go this route if necessary.
But instead of hearing that surgery was appropriate for me at this stage, Dr. Howe told me that structurally I had a stable spine. He said there was mild compression of the nerves at the L4-5 level, but that surgery for this particular condition with this level of compression would yield unpredictable results, so therefore he did not recommend surgery. He presented other options for me to consider, including an epidural steroid injection at that level. Dr. Howe’s professional analysis gave me the information and confidence that I needed to make an informed decision not to pursue surgery at this stage.
What we want in a doctor is someone who listens, someone who is knowledgeable, someone who is skilled, and someone who puts our best interests first. If the time does come when I do require spinal surgery, Dr. Howe will be at the top of my list regarding someone I can trust. If necessary I will travel a considerable distance to receive the benefit of his care.”

I recently slipped on a wet floor and broke my right wrist. As an active outdoors person, I enjoy skiing, snowmobiling, jeeping and dirt bike riding so I was concerned about future limitations if healing didn’t go well. I researched the list of orthopedic doctors in my area to find someone that was excellent with patients and a real expert. Dr. Howlett is definitely both! He was so caring and thorough in every step. There were options of treatment that he fully explained and was most concerned that I was comfortable with our plan. The assistants, physician’s assistant and hospital team were also amazing! Every one of them were very caring and fully knowledgeable answering questions about my treatment and rehab. Under the circumstances, it was the most wonderful experience. I’d like to say I heal like a 15 year old as it was impressive, but I think that credit goes to Dr. Howlett as a true expert in orthopedic surgery! Thank you!

Not long ago, I had an accident where I was knocked unconscious, and when I came to, I could see the bones in my arm/elbow area. This is when I met Dr. Howlett at Proliance Orthopedic Associates. Dr. Howlett had great bedside manner from the beginning. When it came to my injury, he didn’t insist on surgery right away, instead, suggested other treatment options to see how the injury could heal on its own without surgery. I really appreciated his conservative approach to treatment, as it is not always necessary to do the most extreme treatment option. He thoroughly explained all of my options, as well as what to expect. He made me feel involved in my care, and always wanted to know how I was doing. I would highly recommend Dr. Howlett because he is a very caring and upbeat yet professional surgeon, who has high concern for his patients and their quality of life.

Dr. John Howlett is awesome!
I’m a traumatic brain injury patient; broken neck along with other injuries including my right hand was injured at the time of I was a passenger in an ATV accident. I was flown from Yakima to Harborview in critical condition. My hand purposely did not receive attention at this time as Harborview provided practical lifesaving measures knowing my hand could be dealt with at a later time providing I lived. Thanks to Harborview, six months later I’m alive, released from my rehab therapy and released to return to work. Harborview repeatedly recommended to me that I see a specialist to evaluate my right hand for recommendations. I wrote down 7 hand questions I had and I obtained an appointment at Orthopedic Northwest in Yakima; this specialist did not even answer one of my questions. Because this happened, my best friend Bob Larson arranged for me to have a new patient appointment with Dr. John Howlett. I was so pleased with this second opinion appointment results that I could not wipe the smile off of my face. I seriously wish my appointment could have been recorded, the Yakima Orthopedic Physician could learn from it. It felt to me that I was a waste of their time in Yakima when I mentioned with my TBI that I’m afraid of anesthesia.
Dr. John Howlett not only had my x-rays up, he enlarged them and reviewed with me in detail of what he was looking at and informed me my hand was still nicely aligned even though the knuckles have a chip, he had me perform multiple hand movements, he answered all of my questions for me, he asked if I had any other questions and provided me a form listing Finger and Wrist Exercises, Velcro and tape that I may use on my right-hand fingers I feel it is needed.
I’m very grateful I was given the opportunity to see Dr. John Howlett, he makes a positive difference!

The pain I was having in my hand started in March while I was clipping limbs off of a tree. By April my hand started to swell up so I went to my doctor who first referred me to physical therapy. I attended 9 sessions with the therapist, who in the beginning mentioned that I had carpal tunnel. As soon as he mentioned this, I asked him why I couldn’t have surgery to correct it. The therapist at that point discouraged me from surgery, but after 9 sessions, I was still having shooting pains. This is when I went back to my primary care physician who then referred me to Dr. Howlett at Proliance Orthopedic Associates in Renton. I had surgery with Dr. Howlett for my carpal tunnel in June of 2017 and have had no pain since! I have full function of my hand again when before I couldn’t even write or cut up my food. He was great! I’m so happy with my experience. Along with Dr. Howlett, everyone I encountered at this office was so friendly and helpful. Thank you.

I was referred to Proliance and Dr. Howlett due to a fall I took where I fractured my left arm just below the shoulder. When I first went in to see him I was in quite a bit of pain. The people who worked with me were very conscientious of that and did their best to make me comfortable. Every time I have been there Dr. Howlett and the staff have been gentle, friendly, helpful, informative and kind. They are interested in me as more than a patient but as a person asking about things other than just my broken arm but family, interests and such. I would recommend them to anyone who needs orthopedic care. They are the best.

I’ve seen Dr. Howlett multiple times for problems with my hands. Dr. Howlett has the most calming personality that really inspires confidence as a patient. He’s great at calming my fears and what I appreciate the most is that he really listens to me. Aside from his amazing bedside manner, he is an excellent surgeon. You can hardly tell where the incision was, and it’s obvious how skilled he is. Proliance Orthopedic Associates is a very well organized office. I’ve never had a long wait time here, and everyone keeps you notified of everything along the way. I know that if I have any other problems with my hands that this is the place I’ll come. Thank you, Dr. Howlett.

I broke my wrist while snowboarding, which is how I met Dr. Howlett. I came into the office for a consultation after I had my cast taken off, and Dr. Howlett recommended surgery. Since surgery was the recommendation, I reluctantly agreed. I was nervous for the surgery; however Dr. Howlett took great care of me! A couple weeks after the surgery, I came back and had my cast taken off, and everything worked, just like Dr. Howlett said it would. I highly recommend any of the orthopedists at this practice for anyone who has a broken bone or sports medicine problem. Everyone in the office is very well trained and took care of me very well.

I first met Dr. Howlett in the ER when I broke my shoulder, he was the on-call doctor and I’m very glad that he was. He did surgery on my shoulder and was extremely thorough in explaining the injury as well as what needed to be done to fix it. I came back to see him for my other hand issues including carpal tunnel, trigger finger, as well as another broken shoulder. Dr. Howlett oozes competence and he really knows what he’s doing. The office people are always really friendly as well, and they are always running on time, and sometimes even early! I’m a happy patient of Proliance Orthopedic Associates and Dr. Howlett.

As a child I had scoliosis and had a steel rod in my back. So as an adult, when I started having numbness down my arms, I came to POA because I thought it was a problem with my back. Some tests were done, and I was diagnosed with Carpel Tunnel. I was nervous when I came in to see Dr. Howlett for my Carpel Tunnel diagnosis, but he was so sweet that my nerves quickly went away. He worked with my schedule to fit me in for surgery on the day that worked best for me, and when I arrived at the Surgery Center I instantly was treated like a queen. Dr. Howlett would come to visit me before and after surgery to check to see how I was doing. I really appreciated his openness and kindness and how he let me know exactly what I should expect during recovery. I am recovering quickly with no issues. He is a sweetheart and so stinking cute! I told him if I was his Mother, I would be working hard to promote my sweet son! I love how he was so kind and always looked me in the eyes; he made me feel like I was his friend, not just a number. My recommendation would be to do one hand at a time, I went onto Amazon and ordered a cast cover so I could shower. Thank you, Dr. Howlett.

My name is Annmari and I am 53. I have been Dr. Howlett’s patient for a little over 3 years now. I broke all three bones in my ankle and luckily Dr. Howlett was in the emergency room when I got there and he did my surgery that night. When I woke up I thought “Wow, how am I going to take care of my kids?” and long story short, surgery went really well, much better than I thought. This was the best experience that I could have had in my condition. After surgery, during recovery, if I had a problem or if I was worried about something, I would call Dr. Howlett and he would comfort me and talk me through it. I had a problem with a medication and called Dr. Howlett right away, he promptly fixed the problem for me. There has always been a quick response when I call and everyone is always so helpful. This accident not only affected me but my whole family. Dr. Howlett was able to answer my families questions as well as my own and explain them in a manner that we could all understand. Now my daughter is inspired to go into the medical field at a young age, due to the great experience I had with Dr. Howlett. Dr. Howlett is a very compassionate person, you can talk to him about anything, he also educates you regarding what is happening. My follow-up care has been just great! Scheduling is always very easy and the whole staff is very professional and warm. When my daughters came with me to my appointment they said, “Mom, it isn’t scary here, everyone is nice.” It’s been a wonderful experience overall and I’m so grateful of Dr. Howlett and the whole staff.

I went in to see the skin doc for something little on my face. Really being vain. When I was talking she noticed a mole on my finger. (I hate this mole, came up after a burn) She said that looks like cancer and took a biopsy right away. It came back cancerous and surgery needed. I tried the Hand surgeons they told me to go to but they kept rescheduling me and wound up never seeing me. Some people told me about Proaliance. I gave them a call and they had me in shortly. They saw the urgency to get this surgery done. It was important to get it all before it got to the bone or blood. My first apt, Dr Howlett took great time and consulted other specialist so by the time I left I felt confident in the next steps. On surgery day, I was checked on by every one who would be dealing with me during surgery. Checking to see if I had any questions or concerns. It went as they said it would. I was surprised when I only had two fingers unwrapped and was wrapped up to my elbow. They did a full skin graph down to the bone on my ring finger and took the graph from the side of my hand. They asked if there were any questions and they took pictures and emailed them to me of the actual process and what was done. The follow up appointments went well. They always asked if I had any other questions and fully understood what was happening. When I was scared the skin graph was lifting, they got me in right away and checked it out. Always asking if I understood and had any questions. Excellent service through it all. Mostly fully recovered now. Scars are mostly healed and some sensations are different but will continue to heal. There is nothing I can not do with my hand.

I fell at home in 2014 and needed a half hip replacement, which sounded interesting. Dr. Howlett was the surgeon, and I found him capable, knowledgeable, and kind. Had the surgery at Valley Medical Center, and was at Wesley Homes for Rehab. The surgery went fine and the treatment by Dr. Howlett and other professionals was excellent, but was glad to be home. I did buy a Senior Safety alarm as I am often by myself. Recently fell, or didn’t realize how close I was to edge of bed, and instead of sitting up and standing up, I rolled off the edge of the bed and came down hard on my knee. After a few days of pain which did not get better, I went to Primary Physician, and she had x-rays done. No fracture but took Tylenol 3, and seems improved, except for old age arthritis. As Bette Davis said “Old Age is not for sissies.” Would not hesitate to see Dr. Howlett again if needed. 84 years old.

Dear Dr. Howlett,
I have had many surgeries, but I have seldom had the care that you took to explain the process I would go through. After the surgery, when I saw the X-rays, and the incision, I could tell that you had done an excellent job. More than that, you reassured me that you would take care of pain needs and you followed through. I have never had such a fast-healing injury, and such confidence in my surgeon. I have confidence that my wrist, which required six pins and a plate, which will be with me for life, will heal to its fullest potential. The time that you took to allay my fear of pain made the whole ordeal much easier. Thank you for your skill, bedside-manner, and professionalism. You are an artist!

First I want to say how thankful I am that my husband talked me into having my knee replaced. Of course he had some help from the doctor who replaced both his knees – Dr. Fredrick Huang. I had been suffering with terrible knee pain, putting off even thinking about a total knee replacement, but then the pain became intolerable. That is when my husband took me to see Dr. Huang who showed me the bone on bone X-Rays. No wonder I was in such pain. The surgery went off without a hitch and I thank Dr. Huang for his skilled hands and the outstanding personnel assisting him in the operating room. I am looking forward to the healing process to be over and I can continue my activities again. Thanks to Dr. Huang and his team.
My husband and I have been confined in the hospital many times over the past 15 years and have had exceptional nurses, good nurses, and a few that were not so good. During my recent stay (March 1 – 4) on the 5th floor of the Joint Center, at Valley Medical Center in Renton, WA, I had the most outstanding nurse of all my experiences in hospitals. Oksana (swing shift nurse) was very knowledgeable, caring, friendly, and made my husband and I feel that her comfortable demeanor was going above and beyond what I am sure, was required of her. She is not only an outstanding nurse but also a decent human being. VMC is very fortunate to have Oksana as one of their nurses.
The overall care I received in the hospital was wonderful. Debbie, the day nurse, would brighten up my day each time she entered my room. She too, provided outstanding care and was very attentive to my needs and well-being.
Too many times I hear about how bad doctors and nurses do their jobs. Dear Abby has many letters from folks who experience so-called inattentive and sloppy care. I just want to recognize Dr. Huang, his staff and the nurses of the Joint Center, for the outstanding skills and care they provided me.

Letter of Appreciation for Dr. Huang
I happen to have the opportunity of having you do a left hip replacement for me after the first one failed. It was after hours and you were the on-call Orthopedic Surgeon. You took extra necessary steps to stabilize my hip and I have had no problems since.
A few years later it became necessary for me to have a total right knee replacement after I fell and did extensive damage to my knee cap, ligaments, tendons and had three additional fractures in the bones above and below my knee. You skillfully repaired the damage I had caused and once again you took extra necessary steps to lengthen my right leg so that it is now even with my left.
I was blessed to have been put into your hands to repair my hip. It was because of that experience that I chose to have you do my knee replacement.
It has been a long time since I have had the pleasure of experiencing any medical personnel who actually takes time to know their patients injury, then take all required steps to ensure a satisfactory outcome for the patient.
I have to say, I was unexpectedly surprised when you called my hospital room to talk with me to see how I was doing, after an event which had the potential of causing long term health conditions, or death.
Although you have PA’s and there were other on call doctors and nurses who most likely were able to handle the event, it is my understanding that you were personally involved with my care until I was out of danger.
I guess what I’m really trying to say is that you are not only a skilled Orthopedic Surgeon, who makes himself familiar with the injury of each patient you treat, but then prepares himself for any extra procedure beneficial to the patients recovery and future wellbeing. You show an honest concern for your patients and explain everything so it is easily understood before and after surgery. Then you take the responsibility of engaging yourself in the patients care and wellbeing prior to leaving the hospital and during follow-up appointments.
I have a great deal of respect for you as an Orthopedic Surgeon, as well as a person. I am grateful that you chose to be engaged with my care while in the hospital and for checking up on me after the event. I know how busy you are.
Just for your information, I have mentioned all of this to other doctors in various positions, as well as others and it appears what I have expressed in this letter is a shared feeling of respect for you as a physician and a person.

I had injured my hip labrum 18 years before I saw Dr. Huang. At that point I was keeping pain under control using anti inflammatories but my limp was getting worse. I first saw Dr. Huang in February 2013 and when he asked what was a good date for surgery I said November. He gasped and said you can’t make it that long. Since pain was being managed at that point I just laughed and said I didn’t have time before that so we left it that I would see him again in August to start looking for a date in November. BIG MISTAKE. I should have believed him that the pain was going to get worse. By August I was in so much pain that I wanted the surgery right then but he was booked until late October. I had the surgery on October 23rd (4 days before my 60th birthday – Happy Birthday to me). That was a Tuesday, I went home on Thursday and went out and walked a half mile on Friday. By Monday I was up to a full mile and life has only gotten better since then. Dr. Huang was fantastic, he agreed to doing the surgery from the anterior position which is the only way to go. No restrictions to movement afterwards and very quick recovery. Thanks to everyone at Proliance and Valley Medical.

Dear Dr. Huang,
There is nothing more precious to me than being able to go and do things with family and not have to sit every 15 minutes because my knees hurt. I walked a whole fair and never once had to sit down! I can now stand in one place for hours without pain when before I could only handle about 15 minutes. I am SO happy!
Words cannot express how grateful I am to have the gift of these new knees! To those who hear that I have had knee replacements, and are on the fence about having it done, I tell them “DO IT!” I have given several people your name and tell them you are the best! Hope you don’t mind!
So from the bottom of my heart, thank you so very much for giving me my life back and my legs to walk with! I am going to try a 5K next year!
Most sincerely,
// Mary

I can’t tell you enough what a different person Chad is lately. He’s swimming and biking a lot, and slowly adding more activity. He is so much happier when he’s not in pain. I didn’t really understand the daily pain he dealt with prior to surgery. I know he’s still in the recovery phase, but so far it’s a remarkable improvement!
He’s on track to start school again Sept 23rd and back to work on October 7th, then hopefully back to some of the sports he loves.
I am not sending this to you as a POA employee, but rather the Mom of your patient. Your expert care, compassion, stellar surgical skills, and understanding of what Chad hoped to accomplish from this surgery were the best we could ask for.
Jessica is also easy to communicate with and accommodating as well, you are a good team.
Thank you for everything you do,

Dr. Huang and Medical Team,
Since my surgery last October 2010, I wanted to share my adventures on the road to recovery and provide photo evidence. You cleared me to start getting back into jogging at 16 weeks post-up.
April 2011 (24 wks) : SEAHAWKS RUN – Finished my second 5k. Paced at 10:16/mile.
June 2011 (32 wks): SEATTLE ROCK n ROLL – Finished my FIRST half-marathon – 13.1 miles in 2 hrs & 22 min. Paced at 10:54/mile.
July 2011 (35 wks): WARRIOR DASH – You probably wouldn’t have wanted me running on this kind of terrain, but I was able to compete in a 5k obstacle course, consisting of things like scaling walls, climbing ropes, running/crawling through mud, under barbed wire, and jumping over fire. Finished in 42:56, 12:16/mi. Slower than I wanted, but considering the obstacles, and almost 10,000 people that participated that day, I finished in the top 15% of my age group & in the top 25% overall.
Although I wouldn’t say my knee feels 100% back to normal, I’m super happy to have been able to accomplish what I have, less than 9 months post-op, and I’m still looking forward to returning to high-impact activities.
There IS life after ACL surgery. I certainly didn’t feel like it at first, but if you get any other whiny patients like me who get discouraged after surgery, let them know that in 8 months they’ll be able to run competitively in a half-marathon. They won’t believe you, but then you can bust out my picture and say, “Well, this girl doesn’t even LIKE to run and she did, so you can too.”
Thanks again. 🙂

Dr Huang,
Our daughter, Katie, was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia her senior year in high school, on Sept. 24th, 2011. She endured chemotherapy, 6 months of treatment and worked hard to be able to come back and play basketball for her school. In the midst of her treatment she was named a McDonald’s All American Basketball player, Seattle Times Basketball Player of the year, and signed on to play on the University of Washington’s Women’s Basketball team.
As she was preparing for her Freshman year at the UW, she tore her ACL, MCL and meniscus. We were all devastated after all that she had already endured.
Katie had several choices of doctors to see, and to perform surgery on her. We made an appointment to see Dr. Huang after several of our Dr. friends recommended him, and after seeing other orthopedic surgeons. Katie was so impressed with Dr. Huang’s opinion, graciousness and kindness. She immediately made her decision to have Dr. Huang perform the surgery, knowing that she would be well taken care of and receive the best of care.
We have been so pleased with the outcome of her surgery, the care she received, and the progress Katie has made over the last several months. Her trainers at the UW are very impressed with her results and how well she is doing.
Looking forward to next year as Katie takes the floor for the UW Huskies!!!
Thank you Dr. Huang, Tina and the VOA staff!!

I had been having trouble with my right shoulder for a couple of years and tried non-surgical alternatives. When I slipped on my deck and landed hard on my right shoulder I ended up in VMC emergency, where the doctor referred me to Dr. Huang. Dr. Huang had test done and found I’d badly torn both bicep tendons, had another tendon damaged and torn the bicep and would require surgery. I had had a sports related rotator cuff repair on the same shoulder about 20+ years ago and it took two months to be able use my right hand for simple tasks, and I was worried about not being able to at least type and travel as my job require a lot of both. Dr. Huang did the surgery and I started limited physical therapy the day I came home. Within a day I was able to work on my computer in a sling, kicked the meds after a week so I could have a clear head (not for the faint of heart) and was traveling and working at client sites in no time. In the second week I was brushing my teeth and shaving with my right hand, after a month of aggressive physical therapy, I had regained about 80% range of motion and tossed the sling and could do everything except carry more weight than a coffee cup, open doors, etc. It has been six weeks now and Dr. Huang, his great PA Andy and my physical therapist say I have made exceptional progress, as in out of the norm. I am still amazed and am grateful to Dr. Huang, Andy and his team. My friend had surgery on the same shoulder repairing far less damage and is blown away at my recovery…he was still locked up in a sling and just beginning physical therapy after over six weeks. I attribute my recovery to better surgery techniques, an aggressive physical therapy routine and being VERY careful…continually pushing the pain limits without munching meds, but not pushing to the point of risking reinjury. I was lucky to get referred to Dr. Huang.

Due to the fact I injured my knees severely when I was young and playing sports. I was in need of total knee replacement for both knees. After exhausting every non-invasive way of providing relief I went forward. I am in my mid forties and after finally completing both procedures, I cannot express the thanks I owe to Dr. Huang and his associates. No matter what the problem or condition, I was cared for like family. So there was no question when I needed my rotator cuff repaired; Dr Huang carried out the work and I recovered in no time at all.

At 83 years old, I was very frightened at the thought of needing surgery on my hip. I haven’t had surgery since I was 6 years old, and it was not something that I wanted to go through at the age of 83. I had been limping for over a year, which prompted me to go into Proliance Orthopedic Associates to see Dr. Andrew Merritt. My experience with Dr. Merritt right away was a great one, he was very pleasant, made me feel extremely comfortable, and he exhibited thorough knowledge which made me extremely confident in his abilities as my surgeon. He showed me my images and took a great deal of time explaining them to me, and helping me understand my condition, as well as my options. His treatment plan for me did include surgery, which I was expecting, and after meeting with him, my fears of surgery quickly diminished. The surgery went exceptionally well! The next day I was very mobile, walking with a walker for the next four days. I only needed to take ONE pain pill after surgery and that was in the hospital. That was it; I didn’t need any other pain medication my whole post-operative timeframe, because I was feeling great! After using a walker for four days, I was able to switch to cane, which I used for three weeks. My surgery was a couple months ago and I’m already back on my exercise bike, working out! I am so happy that I came to Proliance Orthopedic Associates to see Dr. Merritt for my care. I would recommend Dr. Merritt to anyone needing surgery, or orthopedic care in general; he is truly “Mr. Wonderful”. I couldn’t be happier with my results, especially at my age. Thank you, Dr. Merritt and Proliance Orthopedic Associates for providing me great medical care.

The surgeries I received in 2016 were a major shoulder surgery from Dr.

I have lived a lot of my life with limitations. Between genetic anomalies and sports injuries, I’ve endured knee pain for more than 25 years. As time progressed, the pain got increasingly worse and the list of things I couldn’t do got longer. I had x-rays, MRIs, various injections, a bilateral lateral release, multiple periods of physical therapy and periodic visits with assorted orthopedic surgeons to discuss advances in surgical techniques. By the end of 2015, my kneecap became severely unstable and most forms of exercise and even everyday walking were challenging.
In early 2016, I explored my options again and found out that a Patellofemoral Arthroplasty would be an excellent option for me. It is a far less common procedure than a Total Knee Replacement. Only one compartment of the knee is replaced and several strict criteria have to be met to qualify. This limits both the number of viable candidates and the number of surgeons who perform the PFA.
Over the course of several months, I did research on the procedure itself and saw three different surgeons. Dr. Merritt inspired confidence right away. He is skilled and compassionate, taking all the time I needed to answer my questions before, during, and after the surgery. He made me feel extremely comfortable and encouraged an open dialogue at every step.
The morning after my surgery, Dr. Merritt was at my bedside to check on me. At my post-op appointments, he was thorough, kind and always had a good sense of humor. The entire staff at Proliance has always been considerate, courteous, communicative and professional.
It has been more than six months since my surgery, and I am incredibly pleased with my results. I am reaping the rewards of all the hard work I put into my post-op physical therapy, which is necessary to get optimal long-term results.
This past winter was the very first one I can remember where my knee wasn’t painful and it was incredible. I can exercise, hike and bike and live my life. I’m thrilled to see what I can accomplish now without limitations.
I am 100% certain I made the right choice. A great big pain-free thank you to Dr. Merritt!

I was in pain for five years before I came here. I could hardly walk because the pain in my back, butt, and leg was so severe. I went to my doctor who did some tests, and finally, he told me that I needed a hip replacement. I had my left hip replaced years prior at a different office, and the experience was awful! I ended up having to repeat the surgery on the same hip three times! So when I was told that I needed my right hip replaced now, I was happy that my doctor had suggested Dr. Merritt, at Proliance Orthopedic Associates. Dr. Merritt did my hip replacement and I’m so happy he did. The surgery was a great experience and went a lot smoother than my first experience (which was at a different office). I can walk up and down stairs, and drive, and I’m very excited to go fishing this year once fishing season starts! It’s been such a long time since I’ve been able to go fishing and I can’t wait. Thank you, Dr. Merritt.

I was living in constant pain, 24 hours a day for years! Before I met Dr. Merritt I was always limping and was limited on the activities that I could do with my young daughter, especially after a full day of work. I had seen other doctors who told me that I was too young for treatment, and then I came to see Dr. Merritt and am very glad that I did. I had my right hip replaced with Dr. Merritt and the difference is night and day! Its just six weeks out and I’m doing great! This was a life-changing experience and I’m very happy I came to see Dr. Merritt. This has been a great experience and I recommend Dr. Merritt to anyone who was in my similar situation.

I take this time to share with you feedback about my experience with Proliance Orthopedics. Over the course of time, I worked with doctors and physician assistants at Proliance to address problems associated with my hip and back. Dr. Chilczuk, Dr. Howe, Jana Flener, and Jennifer McCoy offered great information, explanations and strategies for care. And finally, there was need for a hip replacement. Dr. Merritt was my surgeon.
In a single word I can convey my experience – outstanding!
The support staff at Proliance was helpful as I worked my way through the checklist of things needed before my surgery. From pre-op to post-op, I felt my fears dissipate under the care of Dr. Merritt and Jennifer McCoy. They explained things thoroughly, answered the myriad of questions I had and helped me feel comfortable and confident. Today I am walking normally, have resumed almost all activities and most importantly, have no hip pain. Awesome!
My recovery was enhanced by my immediate post-surgical experience at the Joint Center. It was very clean and orderly, and everyone who came into my room always left things in good order. Food ordered from the café dining was very good, delivered hot, well presented and tasted good, too. The room was very clean, spacious and provided the right balance for patient privacy and access by those providing care.
And most importantly, the Joint Center had great people. From the two nurses who helped prepare me for the procedure to the many who provided care in the Joint Center itself to the physical therapist, all were simply outstanding. They were highly service and care oriented – asking questions, listening to my responses, encouraging and guiding me as I learned to navigate following surgery and in preparing to go home. I am a curious sort of person and asked plenty of questions about the “what” and “why” of things, and I always received a response that helped me to understand things as a patient.
Just this morning I saw Dr. Merritt for follow-up. I am doing great and he said “see you in a year.” Thanks to everyone at Proliance for their outstanding care and support.

Dr. Merritt performed a hip replacement on my dad, who was then 90, in the spring of 2015, using the anterior approach.
In my opinion, this surgery saved my father’s life. At the time, he was spiraling downhill on several fronts. Because hip pain hindered movement, he developed pressure blisters. He rapidly lost strength, developed electrolyte imbalances, and exacerbated heart problems. Through all this, his principal complaint was hip pain, but by this time he was so weak that he had a difficult time finding a practitioner willing to perform the surgery.
We were very impressed with your alliance with other practitioners to address other issues and strengthen my dad so that he could bear surgery. With a few weeks of special attention, he was strong enough for surgery.
The results of the surgery exceeded our family’s most optimistic hopes. Recovery from surgery was rapid. Other medical complaints diminished. When asked how his hip feels, my dad has to think twice, because he no longer includes it in his assessment of how he feels.
The overall arc of my dad’s health and strength has been steady improvement over the past eight months. The trajectory of my dad’s health is totally reversed. He’s 91 now and walks without a walker or cane. His main focus is his next outing to a movie, play, opera, ballet, lecture, etc. and on his family and social life.
I told Dr. Merritt that I wanted to provide a testimonial because I had no idea that my dad’s life and strength would be on the upswing as he passed his 91st birthday. I understand that my dad is one of the oldest surgical patients Dr. Merritt has had, and perhaps the oldest for a hip replacement procedure. If this particular result is any guide, I think it bodes well for anterior hip replacement in appropriate cases for 90+ year-old patients.
I want to personally thank Dr. Merritt for his professionalism and exceptional care for my father.

Firstly, I can’t express in writing or words my gratitude and thanks for Dr. Andrew Merritt. Dr. Merritt’s surgical skills and genuine / sincere care demonstrated for his patients’ orthopedic wants, needs and desires is quite remarkable. Outstanding actually!
Secondly, it is patently obvious that Dr. Merritt has a considerable investment in time and expense in acquiring his special skill set. However, it is my opinion that his patients are the beneficiaries of that investment. Dr. Merritt’s education, training, intellect and genuine passion for what he does shines through. Thank goodness for the Dr. Merritt’s of the world possessing the surgical skills they do. Dr. Merritt’s dedication to his patients and his professionalism is a credit to Proliance Orthopedic Associates as well as the American health care industry.
Lastly, the manifestation of Dr. Merritt’s skill is my quick recovery from two arthroscopic knee surgeries and getting back to the healthy lifestyle I enjoy which includes hiking, mountain climbing, backpacking and hunting in the wilderness. I’m pain free, understand what the problem was and know enough (now) to modify my activities to reduce future problems.
My recommendation is to retain and promote Dr. Merritt. He is a credit to his peers, profession and his tribe should advance and prosper.

I am very pleased with the results of my hip replacement surgery last July, 2015. One of my primary goals was to hike with my husband again, and I’ve been able to do that! We have hiked in California, Arizona and many other states this winter – hikes from 1–6+ miles with elevation change. I am very grateful to Dr. Merritt and Proliance. Thank you!

August, 2015
As a 64 year old active male who has been in pain for the past couple of years, I scheduled an initial appointment with Dr. Andrew Merritt. I immediately had confidence in his ability to “help” me with getting back to my regular lifestyle which included my passion – golf. After reviewing my x-rays and conducting some tests, he diagnosed arthritis in my left hip and suggested hip replacement surgery. He thoroughly explained the anterior hip procedure and what the expected time-lines for recovery were. My expectations were met or exceeded by Dr. Merritt and every member of his staff. The professionalism and courtesy they exhibited was incredible and made my experience memorable. I am now walking pain free and could not be more pleased with my decision to choose Dr. Merritt and his staff and all involved at Valley Medical Center. Thank you for the fantastic care!

I am a 77-year-old female on whom Dr. Merritt replaced my right hip on March 25, 2015. Surgery went well and his staff were very patient and professional when I did not cooperate too well when I was coming out from the anesthesia!
I went home the following day. My recuperation also went very well and I was up and around in a few days with minimal pain.
Dr. Merritt is an excellent surgeon with a great personality. He has an excellent, well trained, professional staff and I would recommend him highly.

I was referred by someone whose coworker had surgery by a different surgeon from Proliance Orthopedic Associates. When I was ready to schedule my appointment, that particular surgeon’s schedule was full, so I saw Dr. Merritt instead.
Based on my experience with Dr. Merritt, I can’t imagine how anyone could be better. I came in because my left hip was extremely painful from arthritis. I had felt on occasion that my hip actually had popped out of joint. I was uncomfortable for some time, and couldn’t enjoy my usual hiking and walking activities.
Two years prior, in Arizona, I had my right hip replaced with the posterior approach. If I were to rate my satisfaction from that surgery with a 10 being high, I would give it a 6-7. Comparatively, after just two months out from my left anterior hip surgery by Dr. Merritt, I would rate my satisfaction at a 10. In fact, I currently have more flexibility in my left hip, than I do in my right. In addition, only nine days after my recent surgery, I was able to put my walker in the closet and haven’t used it since. I can even walk without a cane 99% of the time.
As impressed as I am with Dr. Merritt’s surgical expertise, I am equally astonished by his ability to deal with me. He likely has the best mannerisms I’ve experienced in a lifetime. He’s an incredible gentleman with the ability to take ample time to explain everything. His bedside manner and considerate care is completely top rate. In fact, everyone I dealt with at Proliance Orthopedic Associates, from scheduling on through, has exceeded my expectations. The entire office is stellar. It’s been an excellent experience for me all around.
Although I don’t anticipate a need for surgery again, if I do, I know exactly where to go. Thank you Dr. Merritt, and Proliance Orthopedic Associates.

I first injured my shoulder when I was lifting an electric motor. I felt a pop and immediate pain. The pain was so limiting, I knew I really injured my shoulder. At my first visit with Dr. Merritt, I was very impressed. He really listened to me and my story of what happened to get a full understanding of my injury. He gave me realistic expectations and was very supportive throughout the entire process.
When I went in for my surgery at the Ambulatory Surgery Center, the staff was very professional and great. The surgery went great and I felt like I was progressing well. By my first post op appointment, I was already in less pain than I was before the surgery. I only attended one Physical Therapy session, and decided that route was not for me. I have been doing my own exercises at home, and have already gotten almost all my range of motion and strength back. I am now 6 months out from my surgery.
Overall I would rate my experience with Dr. Merritt a 10/10 and would highly recommend him to others.

I injured my right knee and ankle while racing motocross back in August of 2014. I was trying to ‘look young’ and ended up colliding with another racer and landing on my right side. I went to Valley Medical Center where I was placed into a knee immobilizer. I came to Proliance Orthopedic Associates about a week later and first saw Kristen, PA. I was in so much pain but didn’t realize just how bad I had injured my knee. She then had me follow up with Dr. Merritt. He was very respectful, and reassuring, but most importantly, he was honest. He was very up front about the extent of my injury and how difficult the recovery may be. I really appreciated him and how he helped me through the entire process.
I underwent my first surgery on 1029/2014 where Dr. Merritt performed a Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) Reconstruction, a Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL) Reconstruction, Reconstruction of the Popliteus Tendon, and Peroneal Nerve Neurolysis. As expected, I had a rough time for the first few weeks following surgery but Dr. Merritt was very reassuring that it would get better. I did extensive physical therapy for a few months after surgery, and overall, I ended up healing better and faster than expected. I am now 7 months out from surgery and feel great. I feel like I am ready to get back to racing, but know I still need to let my knee finish healing. I am very pleased with Dr. Merritt and his staff. I would definitely recommend him to others.

I came to see Dr. Merritt after a frustrating experience with another surgeon. I was scheduled for a total knee replacement with a surgeon at a different hospital and the surgery got cancelled when I was in the pre-op area. The day of surgery it was cancelled and with no explanation. I was very upset. Then I came to see Dr. Merritt at Proliance Orthopaedics the next week. When I met with Dr. Merritt in January, he was very straight forward with me about my weight. He explained to me that because of my weight, I was at greater risk of complications during surgery and he would not do the surgery until my weight was down. This was something the previous surgeon did not explain to me. Although I was upset I wouldn’t be able to have my knee replaced right away, I was thankful for the information that Dr. Merritt provided.
Gretchen, my physical therapist, recommended the “POP Program*.” The “POP Program” is a pre-surgical optimization program to help with teaching and encouraging weight loss and health to get you better prepared for surgery. It is designed for patients with arthritis who have difficulty with exercise but need to lose weight. Having struggled with my weight, I had already tried several weight loss programs. At first I saw this as just one more thing that wouldn’t work. I started in the POP program the following week after meeting with Dr. Merritt. Since starting the program, I have not missed a single week. We meet on Wednesdays for lectures and see the nutritionist every 2 weeks. Angela, who is the main person running the program is absolutely fantastic. She is so encouraging and helpful and offers the best advice. I go to the gym every single day and also have a personal trainer to help me with my goals at the gym. I did the 21 day cleanse as recommended by Angela, and I am very happy with my results. I drink nutritional shakes, which at first weren’t the greatest things, but after getting tips on ingredients to add to them, I have begun to really like them and they help suppress my appetite. This entire program is based around encouragement and accountability. I really believe it is worth the money and effort.
I am now down 25lbs since starting the program in late January. I feel good, and am very pleased with the results. I just met with Dr. Merritt again and I am now able to schedule my total knee replacement because my weight is much better. He has explained that this will make my surgery safer and the results better. I plan on continuing the POP program up until my surgery, as well as continuing the physical and nutritional plan afterwards to keep bettering my health. Additionally, my husband has lost 29lbs in the process because he has been following along and doing the program. This has changed the way our family makes decisions and we are now living a healthier way of life.
I would highly recommend this program. It has been such a great, positive experience.

In November 2014, my step son was getting married and all I wanted to do was be able to walk down the isle and be able to dance at his wedding. Fortunately, I was able to do these things, but due to the pain it was difficult. The pain I felt in my hip was very limiting. I could barely walk, it was just horrible. I previously consulted with a different orthopedic physician from another office and I did not like him. When I first came to this office, I saw Jana Flener, PA-C, who I really liked. I also saw Olivia Kenyon, PA-C, and she was great as well. Jana Flener, PA-C referred me to see Andrew Merritt, MD for a consult to have surgery performed on my left hip. When I met Dr. Merritt, I absolutely loved him. He is such a great doctor.
When I was in the hospital for the surgery, all of the staff who had helped me were the absolute best. They clearly knew what they were doing. They even showed me the operating room before I even went in there.
After surgery, I felt great. My pain was minimal. I was able to ditch my walker 3 days after surgery. Soon after that, I felt like I didn’t need my cane either, but my Physical Therapist recommended I walk with it for a little longer, which I did, and I just felt great. I returned to work just one month after surgery.
I no longer have pain. I am able to dance, walk, and even tried running. I feel amazing. I have been calling this a ‘drive-through surgery’ since the recovery was just so easy. Dr. Merritt did an amazing job and I would highly recommend him to anyone considering having their hip replaced.

The anterior approach hip replacement surgery I had was a wonderful experience for me. I suffered from an awful hip with severe pain which bothered me for a long time. I was practically unable to walk. The anterior approach to a total hip replacement gave me no pain at all. My son is a nurse, and we were grocery shopping five days later and he said, “Mom, do you realize you just had hip replacement surgery?” I replied, “No. I don’t even think about it.” Dr. Merritt is an excellent surgeon and has a very good bedside manner as well. As far as I am concerned, it’s a total miracle.

I had degenerative disc in my right hip and suffered for four to five years in pain with the last two or three years being unbearable. I couldn’t tie my shoes, sitting in the car was difficult, and I could no longer participate in yoga classes or play golf. I had to walk off the course it became so unbearable. My quality of life became so compromised and I exhausted every alternative method to cope. On February 26th 2014 I had the anterior approach to hip replacement surgery with Dr. Merritt and it was a miracle. He is wonderful, and talked through it with me every step of the way. His patient report is excellent. He has an excellent demeanor. The whole experience was amazing from the entire support staff, and nurses; the care was outstanding. Within three weeks after surgery I was playing golf again and now can walk 9 holes already. I have already recommended others to Proliance Orthopedic Associates, even other doctors.

POA patient Betty, 89, recently received hip replacement surgery from Dr. Merritt. She details the discomfort that led to her decision to schedule orthopedic surgery and her experience at Proliance Orthopedic Associates. Her peers call her “the bionic woman” because of her speedy recovery following hip surgery. We couldn’t be happier to hear that Betty is feeling so much better.
“I’m so glad I had that (surgery) done. How could I live with that hip as it was? And Dr. Merritt did such a great job.”

To Dr. Merritt,
On a Saturday in April of 2014, I had climbed a step ladder to reach a bowl from a cupboard. Somehow, I forgot that I was on a ladder, and fell. I couldn’t get off the floor and had to call for help. I had fractured my hip.
That Monday, I had a right hip replacement performed by Dr. Merritt. By Wednesday, I went to a rehab center and was walking with a walker and the nurse said in jest, “You know, you’re going too fast with that walker!” Sunday, less than a week later, I was enjoying a nice dinner out at a restaurant!
I felt no need for pain pills and had no pain whatsoever within three days of surgery. Within two weeks, I was walking without a cane. My friends and family are pleasantly surprised to see how fast I recovered from the accident. My brother, who had posterior approach hip replacement surgery decades before me, took far longer to recover than I did with the anterior approach. Dr. Merritt and his staff were great and so nice. I am pleased that I went to Proliance Orthopedic Associates for my care.
(This video is from 6 weeks post operation.)
Sincerely,
// Nicole

It was the day that my left knee collapsed under my own weight for no apparent reason that I realized that I could no longer ignore the pain in my knees. That moment came as a complete shock to me because I’ve been active all my life. I played sports through high school and college, and still skied and golfed regularly. It’s just been the past two to three years when the pain started creeping into my knees. Naturally, like most men, I ignored it and simply wrote it off as part of getting older. But to have my knees buckle like they did, told me that I (finally) needed to seek help.
I made an appointment with Proliance Orthopedic Associates because they did such a great job on my thumb when I broke it in a skiing accident. An MRI scanned my knee to reveal that, although a little worn down, there was still plenty of healthy joint tissue to keep me going. Dr. Merritt quickly assessed that I had simply let my leg muscles grow weak over time. (This probably occurred while I was focusing only on my “guns” at the gym.) He told me that most people hate working on their legs and core muscles, so neglect to exercise them properly and regularly. Doctor Merritt further explained that if one or more groups of muscles are weakened, other muscles will pick up that load. This will then cause a mis-alignment in the joints resulting in, as in my case, the patella to be pulled out of its natural position and will wear down the cartilage. He suggested that I try physical therapy before even considering a surgical solution. I agreed and began with two sessions per week.
It was quite humbling at first because right away, I got a good picture of just how weak my legs were. Granted, the trained physical therapists worked me pretty hard – at least I thought so. But within two to three weeks, I started feeling measurably stronger and the aching in my knees began to subside. I am still in physical therapy, and probably will continue to work on my legs from here on out. But that’s okay with me. My knees have stopped hurting and the strength in my legs is back!
I am so glad that I didn’t rush right into some sort of surgery. I look at it this way: after the surgery, I’d still be facing a long regimen of physical therapy in order to get back onto my feet. This way, I just skipped the surgery part. Thanks, Dr. Merritt and the Proliance Orthopedic Associates team!
Patient and Fan,
Douglas

I’m a 57-year-old guy who has worked desk jobs for the past 30+ years. I’ve been active my whole life. I enjoy playing various sports such as baseball, basketball and soccer, and outdoor activities such as long distance running, skiing and backpacking.
In the past four years I’ve had three different knee issues due to incidents on the soccer pitch. Once it was my left knee, twice it has been my right knee. I’m the kind of guy that ignores minor aches and pains, hoping they’ll go away on their own. The pain in my knees got so bad I had to see doctors at Proliance Orthopedic Associates for help. I’ve had X-rays and MRI’s on each of my knees. The X-rays revealed minor issues with bone spurs, but no major problems. The MRI’s revealed no major damage to my meniscus or ligaments. Why then do I have so much pain?
The answer is something like “Runners tend to have weak hips and glutes, and tight IT bands. People with desk jobs tend to have muscles that don’t get stretched enough. Over time the combination leads to pain in the knees, even though there is nothing major wrong with the knee.” The cure is physical therapy, working to stretch and strengthen specific muscles.
Three times now I’ve had orthopedic surgeons tell me I don’t need surgery, I need physical therapy. Within two months of therapy, my knee pain is gone and I’m back to playing soccer and running the trails in Soos Creek Park. This time I am going to remember my lesson and keep up with the exercises I was taught by the physical therapist.
The physical therapist does more than just work the prescribed actions. In my case the therapist identified several mechanical problems in my walk caused by my body adapting to pain and learning new ways to do things. I had to learn to walk up and down stairs again, because my adaptations were prolonging my pain. In addition, the therapist worked with me on my foot work so I could avoid the motions in soccer games that caused the most recent injury. Finally, therapeutic massage can be somewhat painful at the time but the resulting release in tight muscles is well worth the pain.
I’m glad the doctors at Proliance Orthopedic Associates prescribed conservative, non-invasive measures (performed by a separate organization) to deal with my knee pain, rather than expensive procedures that would benefit their firm’s bottom line.

Dear Dr. Merritt:
I am 77 years old and had been fighting a steady decline and use of my right knee due to continuing pain for several years. I tried various treatments that were temporary at best. Several of my friends had gone through a similar surgery at Proliance Orthopedic Associates with very positive results and suggested that I contact your orthopedic unit. After consulting with you and your team, surgery was scheduled.
First, I want to thank the Anesthesiologist on your team for keeping anesthesia at a level that would not interfere with my heart. We knew that I was an “at risk” patient and his expertise helped insure a successful surgery. Next, thank you to your PA, Kristin, who was very knowledgeable in answering any questions we (my wife and I) had regarding the surgery and care after surgery. She was a pleasure to work with!
Now, to you Dr. Merritt. Thank you! The moment we met with you, you gave me total confidence in your abilities. Your demeanor of confidence and your personality put us right at ease. The surgery was a total success as far as I’m concerned. The recovery pain was less than I expected, and I was back out on the golf course seven weeks after surgery! I can’t begin to tell you how happy I am that I can golf again without pain.
I have attached a picture of me at the golf course, taken on April 19, 2014. I played 9 holes on the 19th. From that time, I’ve been playing 18 holes two to three times a week.
Please feel free to use this testimonial to your abilities as a surgeon to anyone that is considering knee replacement.
With Our Thanks,
Clayton and Joann

We spend our summer months traveling so I put off going to the doctor until June of 2013 when I was having so much pain that we had to cut our travel plans short and had to return home. I was told that I needed a total hip replacement, but I pushed back the surgery, as I was not comfortable with the doctor I had seen. Finally, after being in such terrific pain for an additional 7 months, I went to Proliance Orthopedic Associates and saw Jana Flener in January of 2014. She confirmed that I needed a hip replacement. By that time I couldn’t wait any longer to have the surgery and Jana made an appointment for me for the following week with Dr. Andrew Merritt. Jana had recommended the anterior approach as there is a much faster recovery period; the muscles are not cut; and there is no chance of a hip dislocation. My son-in-law had 2 hip replacements, and he strongly recommended that I also do the anterior approach, as he had a hip dislocation after his surgery that had been done from the posterior (not at Valley POA). His second hip surgery was an anterior, which he said was a much faster recovery and not a chance for dislocation. I also had two friends that had the anterior surgery done through Proliance Orthopedic Associates and they were both very satisfied with their results.
I had my surgery on January 15 2014, and I remember getting into our Jeep SUV on the way to the hospital. It always caused me pain every time I had to get into the car because SUV’s are so high. When I left the hospital two days following my surgery and got into the car coming home, I was amazed there was no pain. I couldn’t believe it! I would say this surgery is a piece of cake, but maybe I shouldn’t go quite that far. Before surgery, I was in such pain that I was unable to go out of the house, and my husband had to do all of our errands. After surgery, I was able to drive in three weeks, go grocery shopping, and do all of the things I had been missing for so many months. I simply did five minutes of easy exercises 2x’s a day at home. My recovery period was so much faster and less pain than I had expected. I only used one third of the pain pills I was given as I could easily get by with just Tylenol.
I would highly recommend Proliance Orthopedic Associates to anyone that needs hip or knee surgery and I loved Dr. Andrew Merritt! He explains things so you can understand, he takes time to listen and is very caring and compassionate, with a great bedside manner, and it doesn’t hurt that he is so good looking! And I can’t say enough about Jana Flener who assisted in my surgery. In fact, they will be doing a knee replacement for me in the fall.

I received foot fusion surgery for arthritis on Nov. 11, 2015. I feel great now. I just went back to my bowling in March. I am also able to walk my dog at least six blocks, where I was only able to walk a few blocks before. Dr. Novak was very upfront. I was non-weight bearing for three months before surgery.
I also told him the other day that I was going to try golfing again. I haven’t golfed in 1.5 years. I am thoroughly excited to get back at it.
The physicians at Proliance Orthopedic Associates do a great job. I really enjoy the doctors there. I feel great now. The surgery was successful and I have no pain now that I had prior to surgery. Dr. Novak did a great job!

I had surgery on February 3 of this year. I was terrified and I had not taken care of my ankle for three months prior to surgery. Dr. Novak was really understanding and listened to my problems. I am heavy and he did not mention that but gave me a proper diagnosis. He was also able to work with me for the holidays and referred me to the prosthetics team to get me a brace to wear to help stabilize me.
On the day of surgery, I was terrified, but Dr. Novak reassured me and also reassured my fiancé which was really important to me. I am doing wonderful now and I go back to work in one week. Dr. Novak had very clear instructions post-surgery and my recovery has been really smooth. I have had no problems.
I’m over the hill happy with my experience and recovery.

WOW, where to begin? Firstly, I want to thank Dr. Novak, he is an excellent doctor and very experienced. I broke my fibular playing soccer in July and was in a lot of pain. He immediately talked about surgery and was able to repair my broken fibular the following week. Recently he helped remove two broken screws that hold my fibular and tibia together. He is so professional, knowledgeable, friendly, caring and has such a great bedside manner.
And secondly, the staff at Proliance Orthopedic are very friendly. The Renton location is very busy because of their expertise. I highly recommend Dr. Novak.

I came to see Dr. Shrivastava at Proliance Orthopedic Associates for a broken wrist. My experience at Proliance Orthopedic Associates was a long process of being in and out of casts over five months. I ended up damaging my broken wrist after the first 3 weeks of the healing-which lead to surgery and even longer recovery. I have learned to be patient and not doing things during my recovery. Dr. Shrivastava did a great job explaining how the surgery would happen and what to expect during my recovery in and out of the casts. He set up his expectation for optimum recovery early on in the post-surgery. I now have almost all of the strength and flexibility in my wrist. Thank you, Dr. Shrivastava at Proliance Orthopedic Associates.

My hands have been hurting for more than ten years but I didn’t know what caused it or what it was. Then lately because of the pain and numbing, I consulted my family doctor. He suggested consulting an orthopedic doctor. I chose Dr. Shrivastava at Proliance Orthopedic Associates in Renton and I was scheduled right away.
At the Surgery, I was really confident and trusted him. He’s very helpful and the best doctor. He helped my carpel tunnel syndrome. To me, it’s the best decision in my life. Now I will do surgery in my left hand with him. I am very happy, I trust him and I have confidence in him.
Thank you Dr. Shrivastava, you are the best.

“I had an injury while on a beach vacation. Dr. Niket Shrivastava offered me guidance remotely. I down played the injury. Dr. Shrivastava, very tactfully, described the severity of my condition and provided me a course of action which had me on the road to recovery within days. Had I not taken his advice, my condition would have become much worse require more significant action. Truthfully, I played a bit of a macho guy thing, but Dr. Shrivastava made sure to stay focused on my condition and insisted I take action. Dr. Shrivastava was highly responsive, very clear about the circumstances, and regularly checked up on me in the days and weeks following. I can’t remember a better doctor experience in the past.”

I just wanted to take the time to send you and your amazing staff, especially Gina, a big thank you for my recent care and surgery that I had in August. I am so happy with the outcome and it feels so good to live pain free and not have the problems with numbness & tingling like I had prior to my surgery. I can play & keep up with our grandkids and feel somewhat normal again! I am truly blessed that you were my provider of choice and that I made the decision to proceed with this surgery procedure-In my case I didn’t have many options left to pursue. My family also thanks you and I will make sure I continue to refer friends, family and my co-workers to you and anyone that is living with Chronic Neck or Back pain. You don’t have to live in pain but take the necessary steps to become “pain free”. I wish you and your family continued blessing and success!!!!! Thanks once again 😊

This past summer I met with Proliance Orthopedic Associates for help with my continuing back pain from degenerating discs and arthritis in my spine generating years ago in my college days in the 60s. I met with Dr. Jason Thompson at Proliance Orthopedic Associates and surgery was recommended. I was told to expect 50-75% improvement. The surgery went great, I felt very well taken care of by Dr. Thompson. My lower 6 vertebrae were fused with 12 pins and screws. I am delighted to say that I have 98% improvement and I LOVE my doctor. I would recommend Dr. Thompson to anyone experiencing back pain or problems. I am so relieved of pain and am improving in mobility and stamina daily. Thank you, Dr. Thompson, for the great care I received.

I am blessed to have found great medical personnel at Proliance Orthopedic Associates. As soon as I come into the building, I can feel that I am cared about and that I will be in good hands. I am also blessed that I was referred to Dr. Thompson for my back issues. I believe that great doctors recommend other great doctors, so I was confident from the beginning that I would be well taken care of here. Dr. Thompson is very caring and concerned about people’s problems and overall health; my experiences with him have been priceless. His medical assistant Gina is wonderful; they complement each other well and are a great team. I have been seen by Dr. Thompson several times for different problems and each time I’ve seen him, he always has a positive attitude, which reinforces my confidence in him. It’s important to have faith that your medical professionals can help you and with all of the success I have had with Dr. Thompson, I have a high level of confidence in him. Aside from Gina and Dr. Thompson, the reception staff has always been polite and done a great job. I will always recommend my family and friends to Proliance Orthopedic Associates if they are ever in need. I rate Dr. Thompson a ten out of ten!

I was really taken back by Dr. Thompson because he did everything in a compassionate and quick manor. I had a ruptured disc in my back; I was in a lot of pain and could hardly walk. Dr. Thompson had quickly ordered an MRI on my back and then did my surgery the next day (on a weekend which was his day off). He was so compassionate and I am so happy that I came to see him. I don’t have the constant pain anymore, I can walk standing straight up. I can’t thank him enough for what he did for me. I wish more doctors would be as compassionate as Dr. Thompson is.

I started having problems with my back eight years ago; the pain would come and go and became increasingly worse. I like to take trips and my back pain was slowing me down which was making me angry. I had gone to chiropractors, massage therapists, reflexology, and nothing worked until I finally saw Dr. Thompson. Dr. Thompson ordered an MRI which showed pinched nerves, a herniated disc, and other problems. I opted not to have surgery, so I tried injections for a year…and each time they lasted shorter amounts of time. In the fall, I realized I couldn’t do the injections anymore, so I said, “Please fix me, Dr. Thompson.” Surgery was done on December 8th and I was a new person on Dec 9th. I said to him, “It’s a miracle”. I can’t believe how fast I recovered; I would recommend Dr. Thompson to anyone.

MRI revealed Ruptured disk L5-S1, likely from running road races so many years and all the training with it. Intense sciatic nerve issues steadily increasing with relentless pain in both legs. My ability to play golf or even walk was difficult or restricted completely wondering if I would ever play golf again. Jason Thompson recommended disk replacement and explained the process and risks. Electing to get the surgery rather than live with this kind of pain was an easy decision. the surgery and recovery was a breeze. The hospital staff and the facility at Valley Medical were fantastic. on my feet in just a few days, surgery in July 2014, spent the summer recovering played in an golf tournament October of that year with full range of motion and no more pain. Thank you Dr. Thompson and everyone at Valley Medical for giving me my game back!

The first time I visited Dr. Jason Thompson, he said, “Why did you wait so long?” My back hurt from time to time, some days more than others. But, I didn’t think too much of the pain, because it usually got better. Then it stopped getting better and I knew it was time to do something. Like many other people, I had heard horror stories about back surgery. But, after researching, I made a VOA appointment.
I had a lot of arthritis, stenosis and scoliosis. Dr Thompson was thorough, thoughtful and helpful, recommending everything that might help and seeing that I received all treatments available to me. Only when everything else failed did he recommend surgery. He explained everything that would happen during surgery and what the after-care would be. Then I went to a seminar, hosted by Melissa, that gave me even more information.
Everything happened just as I expected. Now, almost a year later, I can walk better, my back doesn’t hurt. In fact, it is hard to remember just how bad it was! Someone asked if I would do it again, knowing that the recovery period is a bit long. I remember enough of how bad it was that the answer is still yes, you bet, absolutely!!!

In June 2010, I had surgery on my lower back. Until then, I was in serious and debilitating constant pain and had been for many years. I was on large dosages of pain meds that only took the edge off of the pain I was experiencing. The meds were only a Band-Aid and I was afraid of the addiction to them and the side effects were not pleasant!
I decided to pursue surgery. I had put off this decision as long as I could because I had heard horror stories of back surgeries that didn’t work and patients who were worse off than they had started. My husband had heard about a seminar at Valley Medical Hospital and suggested we go check it out to see what our options were. We were very impressed with the presenter, Dr. Jason Thompson, and made an appointment with him the very next day.
During my first appointment with Dr. Thompson, I was very impressed. I felt like he was truly listening to me as I described my life with back pain. He ordered an MRI and he could clearly see that my lower back would do well with surgery. With fear and trembling, we set a date for surgery.
With skill and precision, he fused three discs together. Recovery was painful and slow, but I can honestly say that between God and Dr. Thompson, my back is “fixed”! I was concerned about my flexibility afterward, but the only thing I cannot do is bend over to buckle my shoe! That’s it! Pain is gone! The old me is back! My husband and I are so impressed with the care I received post-op. I would truly recommend Dr. Thompson to anyone suffering from debilitating back pain like I was. My experience was so worth it!

I came to Dr. Veith because I had pain in my leg due to hardware, along with pain in my foot that went undiagnosed by other doctors for 5 years. I spent only a few minutes with Dr. Veith and after a few x-rays he was able to give me answers as to why I was having so much foot pain. Come to find out when I originally brook my leg I had also broke my foot in a couple places that caused me to have arthritis in my foot as well as my ankle. I was so relieved to finally have an answer to my pain after so many years. Dr. Veith also removed my hardware from a previous surgery that was placed in my tibia, my surgery went flawlessly and I recovered very nicely. After the removal of my hardware my pain in my leg improved, I am now able to jump up and down, and run if I would like without having shooting pain go up my leg. The staff at this facility is amazing it is unparalleled to any doctors office I have been to, they are all so polite and truly have compassion towards their patients.

I have now had 2 surgeries at Proliance and Valley Medical and they were both top notch. First was hip replacement with Dr. Barrett a few years ago. There’s a very good reason he has been on the “Top Doctor” list for so many years. My recovery was rapid, and virtually pain free.
I found recovery from bunion and arthritis surgery with Dr. Veith a lot more challenging, as I was completely off my feet for 7 or 8 weeks starting in mid-June 2015. The other part of the challenge is that there are 35 stairs to reach my condo so was unable to leave the building unless it was absolutely necessary. Dr. Veith kept me going through inactivity and mental challenges during the recovery period. Besides being a talented surgeon, he is down to earth, and has lots of patience with questions.
I feel very fortunate to have found Proliance, and recommend the doctors, nurses and support staff.

In 1984, at age 3, I broke my arm badly after I fell off my swing set. No one would ever know I had compartment syndrome, multiple surgeries, and almost lost the use of my right arm. Our pastor and my family prayed over my arm as talks of amputation and skin grafting were discussed. During this prayer time, I felt completely calm, and I will never forget a feeling of complete Love with me. I know now it was Jesus. I feel that God worked through Dr. Robert Veith during this critical time. I remember him being very kind and patient with me as a terrified 3 year old.
I am now 32, and the scar is barely noticeable. I have no issues at all with the arm – it’s completely normal. I am a Mom, wife, and Master’s prepared Nurse Educator. This arm has carried Girl Scout cookie boxes, cheered in high school football games, danced with my future husband at senior prom, held my Dad’s arm as he walked me down the aisle, cradled my two children, held patients in their last moments, and wrote many, many Master’s papers!
God saved my arm for a purpose. I praise him every day for His miraculous healing power.
Sincerely,
// Noelle
Dr. Veith,
Thank you for the wonderful experience of being in your care. It is so important to have a surgeon you can trust, and from the moment I first met you, I knew I was in expert hands. You not only knew what you were doing, but you spent a long time with me explaining every detail so that I would understand everything and feel comfortable with the decisions that had to be made. It is so rare for doctors to take this kind of time with their patients, and it made such a difference! At every step of the way, I was so well cared for…The surgery and hospital experience were top notch! You fused my ankle together so well that it practically looked healed from day one! And my experience in the cast room…was like a big family party! I honestly looked forward to my follow-up visits. Who can say that? You even pulled strings to get me a scooter when there weren’t any more available. But the best part is that I am now walking mostly pain free. I was even able to take my first hike at Mount Rainier! Hurray! You’re the best! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
From,
Alison

Before surgery, I was limping -- I was unable to lift my left foot to walk properly or ride my motorcycle. Since surgery, I can lift my left foot, walk properly and shift gears on my Harley. Dr. Clark showed me clearly (via x-rays), what and where the problem was. He explained the procedure to remedy the problem in great detail. He made me feel confident about the surgery.
Dr. Clark's knowledge and thoroughness was extremely reassuring and everyone was so courteous and helpful.
