In just over two weeks, the 2014 Olympic Winter Games will begin in Sochi, Russia and the ski season will be in full swing in the Northwest.
Three-time Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn reaggravated the same knee she injured last February and will miss the Sochi Olympics this year. A torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a common ski injury. Arthroscopic surgery may be required to reconstruct the torn ligament. This injury typically requires 6-9 months before patients fully recover.
“Fatigue is one of the biggest factors in injury,” writes Troy Flanagan for the United States Ski and Snowboard Association. “It is not uncommon for skiers to get injured late in a training session when muscle fatigue is setting in, concentration is faltering, and the ability to read the snow conditions is reduced.“
