Young People Benefit from Hip Replacement

Hip replacement surgery has been successful for decades. But many patients, and perhaps many family physicians, still classify hip replacement as a procedure for older people. With continued advancements in joint replacement techniques and hip implants, younger patients are benefiting from the procedure.

More than 340,000 Americans have hip replacement surgery each year, improving their mobility and reducing pain. While the average hip replacement patient is in their 60s or 70s, an increasing number of young adults are also opting to have hip replacement surgery.

Young people who have experienced hip trauma from athletic injuries or accidents, hips destroyed by intensive steroid regimens used to treat cancer or lupus, or those living with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in the hip are often able to return to most activities with a new hip.

Any hip replacement patient is concerned with how well the new hip will work and how long it will last. Many orthopedic surgeons are using new types of replacement hip sockets that can be used with either a plastic, metal or ceramic liner, depending on the individual needs of each patient. The ability to tailor to each person’s needs is important in helping surgeons select the most appropriate implant – a key to good long-term results and good news for younger hip replacement patients.

As with any surgery, there are risks involved with hip replacement surgery. It is important to discuss your hip replacement options with your surgeon to best determine the appropriate course of treatment for you.
